Problem Statement

The figure shows a square plate with a hole at the center experiencing
pressure, p = 100 psi. The dimension of the plate is 10 in. by 10 in., the
thickness is 0.1 in. and the radius of the hole is 1 in. The plate is made of
steel, E = 29 x 106 psi. Assume Poisson’s ratio to be 0.3.

Use the ANSYS software to obtain the maximum stress in the plate. The
finite element analysis should be done in several ways.

1. Use element size 0.3 with

a. Quadratic triangular element (Plane2)
b. Linear quadrilateral element (Plane42)
c. Quadratic quadrilateral element (Plane82)
2. Use element size 0.1with
a. Linear quadrilateral element (Plane42)
3. Use symmetrical model
a. Element size 0.3
b. Linear quadrilateral element (Plane42)
Objective

The objective of the project is to make student familiar with ANSYS

program and be able to analyse and solve Finite Element problem.

In term of these project, the objective is to perform Finite Element

analysis and Finite Element solving using ANSYS software.

Result

The result below will include

• Mesh image
• Deformed and undeformed geometry
• Von Mises stress image

– Element size 0.3 quadratic triangular element (Plane2)

– Element size 0.3 linear quadrilateral element (Plane42)
– Element size 0.3 Quadratic quadrilateral element (Plane82)
– Element size 0.1 linear quadrilateral element (Plane42)
– Symmetrical model, element size 0.3 linear quadrilateral element (Plane42)
Discussion

– By doing meshing, we can control the fineness of the mesh. The smaller the element
size, the finer the mesh. It is the simplest way to define the element six\ze by defining
a global element size.
 That’s why if we see through all the results, there are some result where the
meshing is very small/fine as we set it to 0.1 and some are big as we set to 0.3.
– Deformed and undeformed geometry is used to determine the deformation of
specimen after load is applied. The blue region shows when it is deformed and the
dotted line shows when it is undeformed state.

– Von Mises stress image is used to see the stress distribution throughout the entire
specimen. The scaling of colours determine the stress on certain area.

– The most important thing in this finite element solution is the determination of
boundry condition, the Poissons ratio, and the E value of the material.

*** there are no plane 2 include in the library of ANSYS. So for the first
problem, there are no thickness can be input.

Conclusion

ANSYS program can be use in order to solve Finite Element problem

where we can do force testing, pressure testing, temperature effects. The
result can be produced in a lot of form. Most important of this program is
the boundry condition must be right.
