1) Airline passengers arrive randomly and independently at the passenger screening facility

at a major international airport. The mean arrival rate is 10 passengers per minute.
i. What is the probability of no arrivals in a minute?
ii. What is the probability that two or fewer passenger arrive in a minute?
iii. What is the probability that at least one arrival in 15 second period?

Answer

The probability that two or fewer arrive in a minute is
= 0.00004539 + 0.000453 + 0.002269 =0.00276739
iii. μ=nπ new µ is 15/60 x 10 = 2.5

P ( 1 )= = 0.205

The probability of at least one arrival in15 second is the complement to 0 arrival

2) Mean weekly earnings individuals working in various industries were reported. The
Mean weekly earnings for individuals in the service industry were $369. Assume that this
result was based on a sample of 250 service individuals and the standard deviation was
$50. Compute the 95% confidence interval for the population mean weekly earnings for
individuals working in the service industry.

Answer

u =369
n=250
σ=50
CI = 95% = 1.96

3) Forty percent of business travelers carry either a cell phone or a laptop (USA Today,
September 12, 2000). In a Sample of 15 business travelers,
a. What is the probability three have a cell phone or a laptop?
b. What is the probability that 12 of the travelers have neither a cell phone nor a
laptop?
c. What is the probability at least two of the travelers have a cell phone or a
laptop?
Answer
π = 0.4
n= 15
P ( X )= XnC π x (1−π )n− x
a. P ( 3 )=153C 0.4 3 (1−0.4)15−3= 0.633
b. The probability of 12 travelers have neither a cell phone nor a laptop is the
complement of the probability of three travelers having a cell phone or a laptop
P (12) = 1-0.633=0.9366.
c. The probability of at least 2 travelers have a cell phone or a laptop
P ( 0 )=150C 0.4 0 (1−0.4)15−0 = 0.0004702
P ( 1 )=151C 0.41 (1−0.4)15−1= 0.004702
The probability of at least 2 travelers has a cell or a laptop is the complement of
one traveler:
1-(0.0004702 +0.004702) = 0.9948

4) A university found that 20% of its students withdraw without completing the introductory
statistics course. Assume that 20 students have registered for course this quarter.
a. What is the probability that two or fewer will withdraw?
b. What is the probability that exactly four will withdraw?
c. What is the probability that more than two will withdraw?

Answer
π=0.20 , n=20
a. P ( 0 )=200C 0.20 0 (1−0.20)20−0 = 0.0115
P ( 1 )=201C 0.201 (1−0.20)20−1 = 0.0576
P ( 2 )=202C 0.202 (1−0.20)20−2 = 0.1369
The probability that two or fewer is:
=0.0115+0.0576+0.1369 = 0.206
b. P ( 4 )=204C 0.20 4 (1−0.20)20−4 = 0.2181
c. The probability of more than two is the complement of the probability of two so it
is : 1-0.1369 = 0.8631.

5) It is estimated 0.5% of the callers to the billing department of the U.S. West Telephone
Company will receive a busy signal. If today we have 1200 callers;
a. What is the probability that there are five receive a busy signal?
b. What is the probability that there are at most two receive a busy signal?

Answer
π= 0.5% = 0.005

The probability that there are at most two is:
0.00248 + 0.01487+0.04461 = 0.06196

6) Ms. Mona is a lone head officer at the A.A. Bank. Based on her years of experience, she
estimates that the probability is 0.025 that an applicant will not be able to repay his or her
installment loan. Last month she made 400 loans.
a. What is the probability that three loans will be defaulted?
b. What is the probability that at least three loans will be defaulted?
Answer
π= 0.025
n=400
µ=nπ=400 x 0.025 = 10
103 ℮−10
a. P ( 3 )= = 0.007566

b. The probability of at least three is the complement of the probability of two
102 ℮−10
P ( 2 )= = 0.002269
2!
The complement is 1-.002269 = 0.9977

7) Textbook authors and publishers work very hard to minimize the number of errors in a
text. However, some errors are unavoidable. Mr. J. A. Carmen, statistics editor, report
that the mean number errors per chapter is 0.8.
a. What is the probability that there are two errors in particular chapter?

Tarek Fahd 4
b. What is the probability that there are less than two errors in particular chapter?

Answer
0.82 ℮−0.8
a. P ( 2 )= = 0.1437
2!
0.80 ℮−0.8
b. P ( 0 )= = 0.449
0!
0.81 ℮−0.8
P ( 1 )= = 0.3594

The probability that there are less than two errors is 0.449 + 0.3594 = 0.8084

8) The average time a subscriber spends reading “The wall Street Journal” is 49 minutes.
Assume that the standard deviation is 16 minutes and that the time is normally
distributed.
For the 10% who spend the most time reading the journal, how much time do they spend?
Answer
µ= 49
σ= 16
According to the bell shape Z=.45 = 1.65
x=μ+ Zσ
X = 49+1.65x16 = 75.4 min
x −μ 75.4−49
Z= = = 1.65
σ 16

9) A Nielsen survey provided the estimate that the mean number of hours of television
viewing per household is 7.25 hours per day (1997). Assume that the Nielsen survey
involved 200 households and that the sample standard deviation was 2.5 hours per day.
Ten years ago the population mean number of hours of television viewing per household
was reported to be 6.70 hours. Letting µ = the population mean number of hours of
television viewing per household in 1997, using α = 0.01, test the hypotheses that the
mean time is more than 6.70.
Answer
n=200
σ=2.5
α=0.01
X́ =7.25/day
µ=6.7
H ° ≤ 6.7
H 1 >6.7
According to the bell shape the Z cret is 2.58
x́ −μ 7.25−6.70
Z calc= = = 3.11
σ / √n 2.5/ √ 200
Taking the Z value into consideration we accept H 1 and reject H °

10) Microsoft Outlook is believed to be the most widely used e-mail manager. A
Microsoft executive claims that Microsoft Outlook is used by at least 75% of the
Internet users. A Merrill Lynch study reported 72% use Microsoft Outlook within a
sample of 250 users. Use α = 0.05 to test the hypothesis that at least 75% use it.

Answer
n=250
α=0.05
P=0.72
π=0.75
H ° π ≤ 0.75
H 1 π >0.75
According to the bell shape the Z cret is 1.96
P−π 0.72−0.75
Z calc= ¿
π (1−π ) 0.75(1−0.75) = -1.095
√ n √ 250
Taking the Z calculated value into consideration we don’t reject H °
