Guiding question: When asked by CNN how he would like to be remembered, Zhang Yimou
replied “For movies with strong visual expressions and a remarkable
Chinese style”. How can cinematography contribute towards your own
visual style?

Aims : (knowledge, understanding, application, reflection, evaluation, attitude)


• To extend student’s knowledge of storytelling through the medium of cinematography in film
• To extend student’s understanding and appreciation of their own and other cultures
• To extend student’s understanding of how to create meaning through visual imaging.
• To develop student’s confidence and skills in manipulating visual film equipment.

Learning activities:
• Workshop cinematography skills including colour, lighting, camera angles, distances &
movements, lenses, filters and special effects.
• Develop critical awareness through observing a variety Zhang Yimou film texts.
• Workshop and practice practical skills which develop confidence and encourage creativity.
• Prepare and present works within prescribed perimeters.

Assessment
Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding – Choose a film by Zhang Yimou and present to the rest of
the class the importance of cinematography in the film you chose.

Criterion B: Application – Shoot a short film inspired by the work of Zhang Yimou.

Criterion C: Reflection and Evaluation - Continuous

Criterion D: Artistic awareness and personal engagement - Continuous
