Answer All Questions

1. Give expression for strain energy for Torsion.

2. Differentiate long column from short column.
3. What is South Well's plot?
04. Give the strain energy expressions for a member subjected to axial and bending loads.
05. A solid cube of steel (E = 210 GPa) is subjected to a tension 150 MPa, find the strain energy per unit
volume.

PART-B (16+16+8= 40 Marks)

6. (a) Find the buckling stress of a hinged-hinged column of length 100 cm and having T-cross
section. The dimensions of the flange are 10 cm x 2 cm and the web 10 cm x 2 cm. Derive the
formula used. E = 70 GPa. (16)

(b) A built-up beam of 30 cm x 100 cm x 30 cm with flange depth of 5 cm and web thickness of
2 cm is simply supported at its ends. Compute its length, given that when it is subjected to a load
of 40 kN per metre length, it deflects by 1 cm. Find out the safe load, if this beam is used as a
column with both ends fixed. Assume a factor of safety of 4. Use Euler’s formula. E = 210
GN/m2. (16)

7. (a) A propped cantilever beam AB of length L and uniform1EI is subjected uniformly distributed
load of intensity q N/m and a concentrated load W at its mid-point. The beam is fixed at A and
B, C (at centre) is roller supported. Using Castigliano's theorem or any other methods compute
the reaction forces at the support points A and B. (16)

OR

(b) A fixed - fixed beam AB of length L and uniform1EI is subjected uniformly distributed load
of intensity q N/m and a concentrated load W at its mid-point. Using Castigliano's theorem or
any other methods compute the reaction forces at the support points A and B. (16)

8. Derive the expression for buckling load for a column with one end fixed and the other end free.
