Symptoms of
Left-sided Heart Failure

• Dyspnea
• Grade (on exertion – at rest)
• Orthopnea
• Cardiac asthma
• Diaphoresis with feeding
• Cough – expectoration – hemoptysis
Symptoms of
Right-sided Heart Failure
• Edema
• Lower limb
• Puffiness of eyelids
• Pain in right hypochondrium
• Jaundice
• Congested neck vein
• Dyspepsia
Modified Ross Heart Failure
Classification for Children
Class I Asymptomatic
Mild tachypnea or diaphoresis with feeding in infants
Class II Dyspnea on exertion in older children
No growth failure
Marked tachypnea or diaphoresis with feeding in infants
Class III Marked dyspnea on exertion
Prolonged feeding times with growth failure
Symptoms such as tachypnea, retractions, grunting, or diaphoresis at
Class IV rest
Symptoms of
Low Cardiac Output
• Brain  Dizziness, blurring of vision,
syncope (fainting)
• Kidney  Oliguria
• Muscles  Easy fatigability, muscle
claudication of lower limb
• Cold extremities
Cyanosis
• Onset
• Course
• Duration
• Cyanotic spells
• Associated squatting
Palpitation
• Tachycardia
• Bradycardia
Symptoms of Hypertension
• Headache
• Blurring of vision
Rheumatic Activities
• History of sore throat
• Fever
• Joint pain
• Which joint?
• Signs of inflammation: swollen, red
• Loss of function
• Migrating
Symptoms of
Infective Endocarditis
• Fever (of unknown origin)
• Thromboembolism
• Acute blindness
• Hematuria
• Hemiplegia
• Skin rash
• Convulsions
• Chorea
Failure to thrive
