The OptiX RTN 600 series TDM/hybrid integrated radio transmission system (the OptiX RTN
600) is a digital microwave transmission system for data packets developed by Huawei. In
addition to all the traditional microwave features of the OptiX RTN 600 series, the system
provides series transmission from the access layer to the backbone layer and can work with

management. Support smooth evolution from TDM microwave transmission to Hybrid
Microwave transmission, which meets the requirement of mobile backhaul evolution from 2G to
3G.

The OptiX RTN 900 (hereinafter referred to as RTN 900) series transmission system is a
TDM/Hybrid/Packet microwave radio system developed by Huawei Technologies. Because the
RTN 900 system is capable of supporting optical interfaces and a powerful platform with high
speed switch, it can work smoothly with the optical network equipment developed by Huawei
Technologies, and thus provides end-to-end service grooming under centralized network
management.

Because the packet radio system is built based on packet switching, it uses the pure packet
architecture over the air interfaces, and thus significantly enhances the capability and efficiency
of transmitting data packets. In addition, the system incorporates the high-efficiency modulation
mode (256QAM), adaptive modulation (AM) scheme ranging from QPSK to 256QAM, QoS,
Pseudo Wire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3), synchronous Ethernet, and IEEE 1588 V2 clock.
Therefore, the system is capable of efficiently transmitting data services that require high
bandwidths, without compromising on the transmission quality of TDM/ATM services. By using
the AM technology, the system adjusts the modulation scheme adaptively according to the
different link conditions to improve the bandwidth utilization. In addition, the quality of
transmitting services with a higher priority is guaranteed.

Currently, the RTN 900 is available in two modes, namely, RTN 910 and RTN 950. The RTN
910, a 1U high and pluggable device that supports a maximum of two radio directions, is mainly
used for tail access; the RTN 950, a 2U high and pluggable device that supports up to six
directions, is mainly used at the aggregation layer. The RTN 910 and the RTN 950 adopt the
universal outdoor units, including the ODU and antenna.
High transmission efficiency

By adopting pure packet switching, pure packet architecture over the air interfaces, and
technologies based on statistical multiplexing, the packet radio system enhances the multiplexing
capability, the efficiency of data transmission, and the capability of handling service bursts. In
addition, by optimizing the radio frame structure and the link layer protocols, the system reduces
the extra overheads, which facilitates the transmission of larger volume of traffic, without
requiring additional air interface resources.

Significantly lowered TCO

In the same transmission conditions, compared with the traditional TDM radio network, the
TDM/Hybrid/Packet radio network achieves appropriate scheduling of the services of different
priorities because of the AM technology, thus further enhancing the bandwidth utilization. After
the AM function is enabled, the transmission bandwidth of the service with a higher priority
(such as E1 service) is always guaranteed, whereas the transmission bandwidth of the service
with a lower priority (such as internet access service) is adjusted dynamically. In the case of
adverse weather conditions (such as heavy rain or fog), the system adjusts the modulation
scheme adaptively (for example, from 128QAM to 16QAM).

Then, the transmission bandwidth over the air interface is decreased (for example, from 200
Mbit/s to 50 Mbit/s), and thus the anti-interference capability is improved. Therefore, the data
packets with a lower priority are discarded, and the quality of the service with a higher priority is
guaranteed. After the weather conditions become normal, the systemrestores the modulation
scheme and the transmission bandwidth over the air interface. Then, various services run
normally. With the AM technology, the efficiency of bandwidth utilization over the air interface
is improved, and less frequency spectrum resources are required. In addition, the number of sites
is decreased, the diameter of the antennas is reduced, the load over the tower is reduced, and the
OPEX of the network is lowered.

Unified transport platform for multiple services

Traditional 2G networks use the TDM multiplexing method, and current 3G R99/R4 networks
use the ATM protocol. ALL-IP, however, is the trend of mobile networks. In addition, the co-
existence of TDM, ATM, and Ethernet services on the same network will last for a long term.
The packet radio network supports the end-to-end PWE3 technology, thus ensuring the
transmission of traditional services and packet services over the same network. In this way, the
network investment is reduced, and the O&M work is made easier.
Improved clock synchronization over packet

Transmitting clock and timing information is crucial to mobile communication networks. The
RTN 900 solution supports the ACR, synchronous Ethernet, and IEEE 1588V2 functions, thus
achieving end-toend clock synchronization over the packet switching network.

The RTN 900 is available with a full range of ODUs and antennas, including the entire
frequency bands from 6 GHz to 38 GHz applicable in different countries and regions around the
world. The ODUs and IDUs can be flexibly combined to meet various application requirements.
They are easy to install and maintain, and support cold start at a temperature as low as –45 oC.
The RTN 900 supports various capacities ranging from low density to high density, thus meeting
different requirements and helping operators protect their previous investments. Empowered by
advanced modulation and demodulation technologies, the ODU has its receiver sensitivity 2.5 dB
higher than the industry average. Therefore, operators can use antennas with a smaller diameter
to reduce the load on the towers, to save their costs while maintaining good link quality.
