ABSTRACT

TITLE: “INSULATION SYSTEM OF TURBO GENERATOR

BY VPI PROCESS”

PLACE: BHEL, R.C.PURAM, HYD-32

Electrical power has become a basic necessity of our daily life.

Maximum percentage of total power generation is obtained by conventional
power plants. Of this steam, diesel and gas turbine power plants are high-speed
systems where always three phase alternators are used. Generators play a major
role in the production of electricity.

In large scale industries manufacturing generators, insulation design

plays a vital role. Insulation is known to be the heart of the generator. If the
insulation fails, generator fails which leads to loss of crores of rupees. The latest
technology for insulation in the world adapted by B.H.E.L. This type “TURBO
GENERATORS” are preferred as it is highly reliable and possesses good
mechanical, thermal properties and dielectric strength.

In our project we have made a detailed study of the Insulation

System of Turbo Generator by VPI Process. This system is employed
by B.H.E.L. first in Asia and second in Germany.

VPI PROCESS:
The VPI process is the most effective way known to eliminate the dead air
spaces that cause hot spots within the coils. These hot spots can be 20 higher than
the average coil temperature. The VPI process ,along with a good resin, provides
a low thermal resistance path that lowers the average operating temperature of the
generator

During the VPI process, the resin seals the generator against environmental
conditions and bounds all components of the insulation system together for good
mechanical strength. This is very effective in reducing mechanical vibrations.
These greatly reduce the audible noise level of the generator.
