C ameron’s award winning Environmental Safe Guard (ESG™)

System was developed to provide a safe, reliable and
cost-effective alternative to traditional subsea drilling
practices and combines field-proven equipment into an
evolutionary new system.
Traditionally offshore drilling is done either with a float- Three-barrel
ing vessel, utilizing a subsea BOP stack, with full control and Telescoping
Joint
drilling riser systems or with a jackup or platform utilizing a
surface BOP stack and controls.
Tensioning
Another method utilizes a floating vessel with surface System
BOPs in place of subsea BOPs. High-pressure riser is run
from the surface BOPs to the sea floor where it is cemented
in place. This means that the rig is essentially cemented in
place, allowing no practical means of disconnecting in the Surface
BOP Stack
event of an emergency. Also, if anything damages the high-
pressure riser while drilling, fluids in the riser escape to the
environment.
Cameron’s ESG System evolves one step further, utilizing a
floating vessel equipped with a combination of subsea and
surface modules. The subsea portion, at only a fraction of the
size and weight of a traditional subsea stack, is used to shear,
seal and disconnect from the seabed while the traditional
surface BOP stack handles all the well control functions.
In the event of an emergency, the control (acoustic, Casing/Riser
electric, ROV-actuated or hydraulic) system is used to signal
the subsea BOP to shear the pipe. Once the shearing blind
rams shear and seal off the bore, the control system is used
to signal the upper connector to disconnect, allowing the
rig to be moved safely off location with minimal loss of
drilling or well fluids.

by electrical signals (similar to Interface
MUX systems) while non-critical
functions are controlled by pilot lines
(like the current shallow water systems).
In order to do this, MoRPH systems divide BOP stack
control functions into two basic categories:
• Time-critical functions such as opening and closing
ram and annular BOPs that must meet the API timing
requirement
• Non-time-critical functions
Time-critical functions are controlled by electrical signals,
while non-time-critical functions are controlled by pilot lines
like the current shallow water systems. This ensures
adherence to the API requirement by converting critical
“shut-in” functions to an electro-hydraulic system, yet
retains the simplicity of direct hydraulics for other functions.
The MoRPH system is easily adapted to existing piloted
hydraulic systems.

FLOWLINE CONNECTION SYSTEMS

Cameron offers a variety of ways to interconnect subsea
systems — vertical, horizontal, and hinge-over. For example, the
highly successful Cameron Vertical Connection System (CVC™)
has been used in more than 550 subsea connections and is
growing in popularity for a variety of subsea applications.

MANIFOLDS
As part of Cameron’s total subsea package offering, a variety
of manifold designs are available including template manifolds,
cluster manifolds, and pipeline end manifolds (PLEMs). To date,
Cameron has successfully installed manifolds in varying water
depths and in operating pressures up to and including 15,000 psi.

CONTROL SYSTEMS
The CAMTROL® Production Control System features an
integrated approach and component-level modularity to
provide unequaled advantages in uptime availability, flexi-
bility, and expandability. Integral to the system are compact
retrievable subsea control modules and a wide variety of
intervention options. Cameron has also introduced the
CameronDC Subsea Control System — the world’s first DC
powered subsea control system.

WELLHEAD SYSTEMS
Versatility describes the Cameron line of wellhead systems.
The popular STC™ and STM™ wellheads offer choices of 10,000
and 15,000 psi working pressures; metal-to-metal or metal
end-cap seals; five or six string programs; and a variety of
casing programs.

flexibility, compatibility and interchangeability required
for a wide range of applications. Both the S and IC
wellheads consist of the lower casing head and hanger, and
the subsequent casing spools and hangers. Both wellheads
are compatible with most Cameron tubing spool and
hanger configurations.

IC™ CONVENTIONAL WELLHEAD SYSTEM

The IC Wellhead System features a straight bore design with
a single, 45 degree load shoulder. The chart below describes
the IC System service range.

S™ CONVENTIONAL WELLHEAD SYSTEM

The S Conventional Wellhead System offers the industry’s
highest capacity conventional spool-type wellhead and is
designed for use with all well depths and all types of
completions. It incorporates dual landing shoulders for
maximum casing support. The Cameron S Wellhead System
has been proven to successfully suspend over 2.6 million
pounds of casing weight.

HOW TO SELECT A WELLHEAD SYSTEM

The first step in determining which Cameron wellhead to
use is to determine the casing hanger that best suits the
application. Each hanger profile is unique and is generally
compatible with only a limited number of casing head/
spool bowls. Cameron slip-type hangers are divided into
two groups: SB and IC, each serving different applications.

CAMFORGE™ CONNECTION SYSTEM

Based on development started in 1984, the CAMFORGE
system has been utilized on hundreds of wellheads as well
as subsea pipeline tie-ins. CAMFORGE provides a true
metal-to-metal forged connection that leaves the traditional
welding process out in the cold.
The safety aspect alone has been enough of a deciding
factor to make many operators choose the CAMFORGE
system. There are no open flames or sparks in the
CAMFORGE cold forging process. Therefore, the potential
for ignition of surface gas is completely eliminated with
CAMFORGE.
The CAMFORGE wellhead system’s overall cost is less
than conventional slip-on weld type units. Significant
savings are realized from drastically reduced installation
times of approximately one hour. In addition, offshore
platforms conventional welded installations of a wellhead
often require adjacent wells to be shut in. But not with the
CAMFORGE method, thus avoiding production losses from
shut-in wells.
The CAMFORGE system provides a consistently
predictable connection that removes the worry about
welding variables such as preheat and post-heat
temperatures and welder’s skills — and it can be CAMFORGE Connection
accomplished as easily in the rain as in the sunshine.

The CAMFORGE system requires no welding, ensuring safety.

surface applications. Cameron FLS and FLS-R gate valves
have proven themselves time and time again in demanding
applications such as high temperature/high pressure, and
formation fracturing in various parts of the world.
Cameron offers a family of valves to meet the needs of
the large bore market. For actuated surface applications,
the Cameron FLS valve is paired with the Cameron Willis
Saf-T-Gard hydraulic actuator. For manual surface
applications, the FLS-R gate valve offers low torque opening
and closing due to the unique ball screw mechanism and
lower balance stem.
Both the FLS and the FLS-R offer the same field-proven
features. They are designed to API 6A and 17D specifica-

They offer full bore operation, unlike reduced bore API 6D
designs. Cameron has completed an extensive testing
program for the large bore gate valve design, including

SURFACE SAFETY SYSTEMS

Cameron safety control systems are designed to shut in a flow
line in the event of abnormal condition, malfunction or operating
irregularity. Systems are available to operate single- or multi-well
installations, and units may be operated by compressed air, gas
or electricity. Cameron safety shutdown systems are available in a
number of configurations including panel-based, self-contained,
and pilot-based systems.

Plug and Cage Control Chokes The Plug and Cage
Control Choke uses a plug on the inside diameter of the
cage to throttle the flow ports. This trim is typically used
for high capacity/medium pressure drop applications such
as oil production.

capacities with large trim openings
to pass well debris. Both chokes have
trim that can be replaced without
removing the choke from the
manifold.
