Announcement from Chief Steve Martin

Hopewell, VA - As police chief for the City of Hopewell, I will continue giving my total support and
100 percent effort. After much consideration, I have decided to explore new opportunities.
Many significant accomplishments have been made over the past three years however, I am most
satisfied with the following: Major Crime down over the past two years; Neighborhood Watch groups
have increased in number—10 in 2007 32 currently; Hopewell Police Activity League—PAL’s was
established and now serving our youth and achieved its 501(c)(3) status; establishment of
partnerships with Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, Virginia State Police Narcotic Task
Force; and United States Marshals Service.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about my experience as a member of the Hopewell senior
leadership team, about all the wonderful people I’ve encountered in my years of service with the City,
and especially about the employees of the Hopewell Police Department. The leadership of the City
Manager, Dr. Edwin C. Daley has also been appreciated as well as his personal and professional
advice over the years.
I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the many members of the community
for their overwhelming support and hard work in partnering with the Hopewell Police Department.
While continuing the role of police chief for the City of Hopewell, citizens can be assured that their
safety will continue to be my number # 1 priority. I will earnestly work to assure that the transition will
be a smooth one as the men and women of the Hopewell Police Department must continue striving to
provide Superior Service to this community; our citizens also greatly deserve a continued
commitment to their viability. My family and I are grateful for the many folks who have shown us
respect, kindness and have welcomed us to this community for the past three years.
