ABSTRACT : Chiangsaen II port, a new river port, will be located in Chiangrai province at the conjunction between Mekong river
and Kok river. Its aims were to support freight transport between Thailand and upper Mekong countries particular People’s Republic of
China and also to solve existing – congestion and inconvenience problems. This paper presents the progress of Chiangsaen II port -- feasibility
study and engineering detail design which were conducted in 2005 - 2007; comprised of current problems, transportation demand along
Mekong River compared to road transport via R3E (thorough Lao People’s Democratic Republic) and R3W (thorough Union of Myanmar),
and the evaluation of existing port capacities. This justification presented the essential of Chiangsaen II port leading to the study of vessels
characteristics (regarding to its draft, length, width, and maneuvering ability), number of berths required and pier waiting time, hydraulic of
Mekong River, and possible sites. Finally, after site selection was approved, proceeding into engineering detail design consist of channel,
harbor basin, navigation aids, flood level, warehouses, and CIQ services (custom - immigration – quarantine). It also included the
coordination with neighbored country regarding to embankment protection/erosion and change of thalweg. The project is currently in the
preparation stage which presume after completed will be the largest Mekong port in Thailand.
