BRITISH LITERATURE
PROFESSOR NELLIE VAZQUEZ RIVERA
SPRING 2011

I. Position Papers:
1. Students will submit a one to one and a half page (maximum) position
paper on an assigned poem or text.
2. The paper should reflect the student’s critical analysis on any aspect of the
text pertaining to the period under discussion.
3. In order to generate in-class discussion, students must be prepared to
express their ideas, opinions, contradictions, etc. on the assignment.
4. Papers must be typed-written (MLA format), double spaced, font #
12, Times New Roman, in black ink and on plain white paper. Papers
not meeting these requirements will not be considered for evaluation
and will constitute a zero (0).
5. Papers will be evaluated on the following criteria and on a basis from one
to five, five being the highest score for a total of up to 20 points:
i. Premises, theories or philosophy related to period under discussion
(any aspect)
ii. Critical interpretation (Author’s message)
iii. Textual evidence required and extremely important!!!
iv. MLA FORMAT (Extremely important!!!)
v. TOTAL: 20 pts.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Reaction papers will be collected at the beginning of
the class session. LATE PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

II. POEMS: Oral/Written Power Point Presentations:


1. Presentations on poems will consist of the following:

i. Author’s biography (most relevant details)


ii. Historical, political or social context in which the poem is written
and takes place.
iii. Intellectual Premises, Philosophical Theories, etc.
iv. Critical Analysis
v. Textual evidence required and extremely important!!!
vi. Hard copy of the power point presentation
vii. Total: 30 pts.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. Absolutely no make ups regardless of excuses.
2. Any required documentation must be submitted on the day of the presentation.
3. Students are responsible for reading all of the material for quizzes and class
discussions.
REMINDER: Plagiary of others’ ideas will be penalized. (This applies to both the
reaction papers and the presentations).
