Malaysian music education curriculum has gone through various processes started from
1972 until now. Along this process it was planned and arranged based on western music
programmes. Now the educators realized there is a need to introduce their own traditional music
into the curriculum of music. There for, the curriculum of the music has been revised and altered in
2003 which included the syllable for local minorities’ music ensembles such as Chinese, Indian,
Iban and etc. Unfortunately, the teaching and learning materials for those minorities traditional
music are very less compared to Malay traditional music. Especially in Indian traditional music,
there are no material was produced in Malay language. This project paper is to produce a module
on teaching and learning ‘Tabla’ an Indian percussion instrument which has been played in
traditional and popular songs in Indian music culture. The Tabla also has been used in Malay
traditional songs such as Zapin. This module is to promote Indian traditional music instruments
and fulfil the objective of multicultural music curriculum according to the ‘Kurikulum Bersepadu
Pendidikan Muzik’ in higher learning centres such as teachers training colleges.
