Body of
proposal Sections (intersperse tables and figures in body of text)
a.
Introduction: a statement of the problem leading to the general question you will pose. b.
Research objectives: a general statement followed by specific questions that you will address. Often
its best to to restate research objectives as specific hypotheses within the methods section (see
below). c.
Background i.
What do we know about the model system and problem you are proposing to study. A chance to
narrow the focus to a specific issue or set of issues. ii.
Study site description: providing also the reason why your site is a good place to address the
questions that you do. iii.
Divide section into the specific hypotheses you will test. Present
complete ecological study often involves three general research approaches, a survey, a
demographic study, and a set of manipulative field experiments. However, what you will propose will
be relevant t oyour question(s). ii.
A section describing what statistical tests (do your best, ask me, or ask a PhD level ecology student)
iii.
Describe a timeline for work (This is often done with an Excel-based table. e.
Describe in a clear and concise way how your study is relevant for solving a problem important to
society. Make the link between ecological problem solving and the larger problems facing
management, economics, education, etc.
