How to Square A Number ?

To square a number, just multiply

it by itself

Example:
What is 3 squared?

3 Squared = =3×3=9
"Squared" is often written as a little 2
like this:

This says "4 Squared equals 16"

(the little 2 means the number appears twice
in multiplying)
Squares From 12 to 62

 1 Squared = 12 = 1×1 = 1
 2 Squared = 22 = 2×2 = 4
 3 Squared = 32 = 3×3 = 9
 4 Squared = 42 = 4×4 = 16
 5 Squared = 52 = 5×5 = 25
 6 Squared = 62 = 6×6 = 36
What about the square of …

Negative
numbers
Decimals

Fractions
Example: What is -5 squared ?

Answer:
(-5)2 = =
(-5) × (-5) 25

( because x = )
When you square a negative number you
get a positive result.

Just the same as if you had squared a

positive number :
Example: What is - 5 squared ?
8

Answer : -5 -5 25
8 8 64
Example: What is 0.08 squared ?

Answer :
2
0.08 = 0.08 x 0.08
= 0.08
x 0.08
00064

=
0.0064

25 25 X 25 625
50 50 X 50 2,500
100 100 X 100 10,000
1000 1000 X 1000 1,000,000
ESTIMATION OF SQUARED
NUMBERS
Round off the given numbers to the nearest ten,
tenth, hundreds, thousandth and etc.

E.g;
Round 7298 to thousands place
= 7000

Round 678.29 to the hundreds place

= 700
EXAMPLE

Estimate the value of 35.62

Answer :

Method 1 : By approximation
35.6 ≈ 40 (round off to the nearest tenth)
35.62 ≈ 402
Therefore, 35.62 ≈ 1600
Method 2 : By determining the range

30 35.6 40

35.6 is between 30 and 40

35.62 is between 302 and 402
302 = 900 and 402 = 1600
Therefore, 35.62 is between 900 and
1600.
