Former Teacher’s Assistant Charged with Having Sexual Relations with Student
Town of Dewitt, New York – Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin E. Walsh reports that a teacher’s assistant, formerly
employed by OCM BOCES, has been charged with having a sexual relationship with a student.

Christen L. Hayes (30), of 164 Castle Creek Road, Binghamton, New York, was charged on January 27th with three
counts of rape in the 3rd degree, three counts of criminal sexual act in the 3rd degree, three counts of sexual abuse in the
3rd degree, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of unlawfully dealing with a child in the 1st
degree after Sheriff’s Detectives assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Abused Persons Unit investigated allegations accusing
Hayes of engaging in inappropriate activity with a student.

Sheriff’s detectives began investigating Hayes in October 2010, after being


contacted by the Onondaga County District Attorneys Office who first learned
of the allegations. As a result of the investigation, detectives learned that in
2009 Hayes had established a relationship with a student who was under the
age of 17 at the time. Hayes is also accused of engaging in sexual activity with
the student on several occasions during the months of June of 2009 and
February 2010.

Hayes was arraigned in the Town of Dewitt Court where bail was set in the
amount of $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. Hayes was taken to the Onondaga
County Justice Center where she posted bail.

Rape in the 3rd degree is a class E felony, criminal sexual act in the 3rd degree is a class E felony, sexual abuse in the 3rd
degree is a class B misdemeanor, unlawfully dealing with a child in the 1st degree and endangering the welfare of a child
are class A misdemeanors.
