Abstract

“The next decade will be the Wireless Era.” -Intel Executive Sean Maloney

Today’s network especially LAN has drastically changed. People expect that they should

not be bound to the network. In this scenario, Wireless (WLAN) offers tangible

benefits over traditional wired networking.

Wireless network shortly called as WLAN (IEEE 802.111/b/g) works on three modes –

Adhoc, Infrastructure and Extended modes. Adhoc network is P2P(or F2F) mode.

Adhoc does not use any intermediary device such as Access Point. Infrastructure and

Extended modes use Access Point as interface between wireless clients.

Adhoc mode does not implement Four way handshake and RTS/CTS concept which

increases the latency. Moreover it eliminates the hidden terminal and excess exposure

problems. Hence it results in speedier transmission.

This paper investigates the performance of IEEE 802.11b/g ad hoc networks by means of

an experimental study. This analysis reveals how adhoc mode eliminates the network

overhead that is applied to the wifi frames in Extended service Mode. The purpose of the

project is to establish both adhoc network and extended service network and study the

effect on the network performance parameters and to prove that these parameters

obtained over adhoc network offer a reasonable values compared to the extended

service network.
