Abstract

In this piece of research we have tried to explore the area of translation,

which is now encouraged more in academia than it was earlier. Many texts
have become a part of the syllabi in English departments for making the
students aware of regional literature; their issues, style, language, etc. To
achieve this purpose the translation needs to be loyal, done with a right
approach. Here we have dealt with Raag Darbari and its English translation
by Gillian Wright. A comparative approach has been taken to find out
whether only the technical aspects of the source language and target
language involved in translation decide its authenticity or factors like
translator being a non-native, his/her proximity to the native culture and the
target language unable to contain the native culture play an important role.

The first chapter provides with a general idea of translation, the text Raag
Darbari and its author, Shrilal Shukla as well as Gillian Wright. It also tries
to elaborate the research topic followed by the research design. Review of
literature related to translation theories and translation scenario in India
comprise the second chapter. In the third chapter we have tried to analyze
the shortcomings as well as the commendable aspects of Wright’s
translation. We have also tried to decode the reasons behind these
shortcomings. In chapter five we have attempted to translate the untranslated
parts of Raag Darbari and the steps we had undergone in this process of
translation is been discussed in chapter four. The last chapter includes the
findings which stand as a pillar to support our assumptions along with some
suggestions which have been made for the future researchers.
