Postgraduate Programmes in Biofuels & Bioenergy Stellenbosch University has been awarded the Senior Chair of Energy Research (CoER): Biofuels & Other Alternative Clean Fuels by the Department of Science & Tech- nology. The vision of the CoER: Biofuels R&D programme is to focus on the technological interventions required to develop commercially viable value chains for second-generation lignocellulose conversion to biofuels in South Africa. The CoER steers a Postgraduate Programme in Biofuels striving to develop human capital with a strong scientific and engineering training. Research-based Master’s and Doctoral programmes, as well as Postdoctoral positions linked to biofuels, are offered at the Departments of Microbiology and Process Engineering at Stellenbosch University, as well as the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. Students can choose from a variety of topics, including: ➤ Microbial Strain Development & Fermentation ➤ Process Development ➤ Pre-treatment & Fractionation of Biomass ➤ Pyrolysis & Gasification of Biomass ➤ Process Modelling for Energy Efficiency ➤ Economic & Lifecycle Analyses Applications for the postgraduate programme – for registration in July 2011 or January 2012 – are invited from HonsBSc, BEng or MTech (for Master’s programmes) and MSc, MScEng or DTech graduates (for Doctoral programmes) in fields related to Microbiology, Biotechnology or Chemical Engineering. Postdoctoral candidates with experience in process modelling and economic & lifecycle analyses are in particular encouraged to apply for a fellowship.
