“In spite of the fact that the country has gained Independence 63 years ago, Myanmar
women, who had come across various hardships during the Second War, are now being
subjected to human trafficking, forced labour and other kinds of misery including the use
of some women as porters as well as human shield in the battles,” the statement said.
“As a result quite a number of Myanmar women, together with their kinsmen, have to flee
across the border while some even have to indulge in flesh trade ( meaning sex trade )
discarding the need to safeguard their dignity. This has in turn given rise to increasing
number of orphans in many border areas,” the NLD statement of 100-Year Anniversary of
International Women Day said.
The same statement inter alia pledged that Myanmar women would struggle together with
their counterparts from other countries under the leadership of Noble Laureate Aung San
Suu Kyi for the betterment of internal and international climate for improvement of the
status of women.
The statement also pledged that under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar
women together with their men folks would continue to brave all kinds of challenges for
bringing Myanmar to the goal of genuine democratic country, which will guarantee Myan-
mar people sustainable peace and fulfillment of human rights.
