Act 1 Scene 1:

 Richard appears in a soliloquy, saying that he cannot rule in peace and detests it
 He then decides on stage to become a villain
 Jealous of his brother Edward, coincidentally also the king, he tricks Edward into thinking that
their other brother, a duke, Clarence has committed a crime.
 He then tells Clarence after under arrest that he will help him, in order to gain both of the
brother’s favor, and slowly turn themselves against each other.
