Chief and Jim,
‘Tom Stanley forwarded an aricle that summarized Solon’s effort to manage deer through archery
hunting. | have attached a recent case study that clearly shows that archery hunting is not effective at
reducing deer densities below 50 deer/mile squared. No one has shown show me a program that
challenges this fact with data anywhere in the country. You are already at this density (approximately) so
you will oly at best keep the population where itis with an entire season of archery effort. As another
example of the limits of archery hunting in suburbia, we have been working in Princeton for 10 years and
in the recent past hunters kill 50-70 deer year. They have access to nearly all Township properties and
‘much private land, and can hunt all archery and firearm seasons (4.5 months). After the hunting season
we kill 125-150 deer with 2 people in 2 weeks to maintain the densities at ~25 deer/mile squared
(pre-fawning). This year Princeton decided to give the hunter the cha
‘ice to kill all the deer to maintain densities at goal. They have killed only 54 deer so far (as of a week
22go), and history shows that the last month of the season only accounts for 10% of the harvest. Archery
hunters cannot even keep the number down in suburbia. | have more data relative to archery hunting
limitations if you see value in it. Ohio hunters are not better than PA or NJ hunters, so do not foo!
yourselves that you can do it different or better. Although | do support the use of crossbows as the best
archery tool
This is not to generate work for me, but to get people to deal with the reality of what works and what does
rot. Itis pointless to go through the politics and logistics to put a hunt together for no management gain.
It only will serve a recreational purpose (which | clearly have no objection to if that is the goal). Moreover,
it hunters can use bait then you will greatly compromise the feasibility of using sharpshooting in the future
‘as deer will get smart to the only method available (shooting from a treestand over bait) and result in
greater costs because of reduced efficiency.
