PLANT DESIGN SYSTEM (PDS) TUTORIAL

You have to do basic settings in Micro station.

1. Mouse button assignments

Reset button

Tentative or Snap button Data or Accept button

2. ‘Key-in’ pallet

If you didn’t find ‘key-in’ pallet in PDS, Go to-Applications-Micro station-Utilities-

‘Key-in’. Then you will get this ‘key-in’ pallet. It is used to give alphanumerical.

3. Setting of windows

Similar to Micro station we can set up to 8 windows based on our requirement.

Always try to work in plan, front, left or right views for better identification of snapping
points.

Practice Basic Micro-station commands like update all, zoom-in, zoom-out, zoom
window area, fit all, pan, view previous, view next etc.

4. View concept:

View concept is very important for any modeling software.

In Front view (Look North) we can see East-West, Up-Down directions but cannot see
North-South directions.
In Plan View (plan North) we can see East-West, North-South directions but cannot see
Up- Down directions
In Iso (Isometric) we can see all directions
How to start PDS:

• Select Pdshell ICON from your desktop or start, programs (Task bar).
• Select project in which you have to work ( After using user id and password if
necessary).

In PDS there are 16 modules. All are controlled by Project administrator.

Some Basics modules:

Equipment modeling -Modeling of Equipments.

Piping designer -Routing between Equipments.
Isometric drawing manager -Isogen or Output of line.
Drawing manager -Annotation and labeling purpose
Pipe support designer -pipe supports
Frame works -civil and structural
• Select option of Equipment Modeling, again same for select design area.
• Select design area in which you have to work
• Select Model in which you have to
work.

• Then you will get below screen.

• Setting of pallets on screen as per your requirements from menu bar.
Always try to open windows 5,6,7,8 against each of windows 1,2,3,4 and wise versa for
viewing TEE (Primary & Secondary axis) orientation in two windows at a time.

Set Isometric view, Plan view, Left view, Front view etc. in respective windows as per
your requirements using respective icons from viewing direction pallet.

EQUIPMENT MODELING

Basically there are two ways of placing equipments i.e. Primitives and Parametric in
which parametric shapes are usually used which is a good practice.

Primitives:
Primitives are pre-defined 3D-Solids like cylinder, cones, dish and box.

• Select Start from equipment manipulation pallet.

• Select parametric help icon.

Here you will get standard equipments like pump, exchangers, vertical and horizontal
vessel, platforms, ladders, handrail etc.

We can modify “equipments “as per client specification.

• Let’s start with Complex vert cyl equip ( Tower or Vertical vessel ).
• Fill the form with values mentioned in the given sketch.
3000
¬ 800

570

¬ 1200
10000

EQPT NO. : T-101

SERVICE: LPG COLUMN
INS. THK. : 80mm

For any vertical equipments primary axis should be UP and secondary should be
NORTH. And for any horizontal equipments primary axis should be PARALLEL to
equipment axis and secondary should be UP for getting proper nozzle orientation. Here
+E1, +E2 and +E3 indicates the types of heads (Dish-Ends)
NOZZLE MANIPULATION

Lets try to place below shown M1 nozzle on Complex vert cyl equip ( Tower or
Vertical vessel ).

• Select Nozzle Manip icon from component manipulation pallet.

• Identify equipment (on which we have to place nozzle).
• Select icon type 1 (from type 1 to 8).
• Fill the form as per Nozzle list and then select ACCEPT/RETURN icon.

You’ll found nozzle M1 added to your nozzle directory as shown.

Blind Flange
For placing blind flange on M1 nozzle.

• Select Add icon from component manipulation pallet.

• Identify Datum point 2 of nozzle M1.
• Select Blind icon from Equipment Primitives.
• Fill the form as shown below and select place by end 2 icon.
• Accept the form.

Manhole Opening
For placing Davit Opening on M1 nozzle.
• Select Add icon from component manipulation pallet.
• Identify Datum point 2 of nozzle M1.
• Select Circular Torus icon from Equipment Primitives.
• Fill the form as shown below and select place by end 1 or 2 icon as per selected
orientation of secondary axis.
