Circles and their

Vocabulary
By Mohit, Maneesh & Harry
What is Radius?
Radius is half of the diameter (distance across
the circle).

Divide diameter by 2 to get the radius.

MT
What is diameter?
Diameter is the longest line on a circle.
Diameter is double of the radius. Diameter is
used to calculate the circumference of a
circle.

MT
What are sectors?
Sectors are small bits of space in a circle. They
are used to find the area of a circle.

MP
What are Segments?
Segments are parts of circles.

MP
What are Chords?
Chords are lines that cut through circles and
reach the other end. The diameter is the
longest chord since it spans through the
centre.

MP
What is PI?

Π
PI is the Greek symbol that represents a perfect
circle. It is used to calculate the features of a circle
(e.g. area, circumference.) It stands for
3.141592653-.

PI is about 3.14

MP
What is circumference?
Circumference is the distance around the circle.

The circumference can be calculated by multiplying

PI by diameter.
Circumference is not counted as the perimeter because perimeter is
only for polygons. So circumference is only for circles.
PI = 3.14
Circumference = 3.14 X Diameter
