Listening test

Section 1. A woman called repairs service demanding to have her fridge fixed today. She
then gave the make, model and age of her fridge, and indicated that the problem was the
fridge being noisy.

The service assistant informed her that it might be the fan located in the freezing
compartment. She also said it was previous repaired due to a door issue. They made an
appointment for after 3:30 in the afternoon on the same day. The service guy then did a
survey because she was a new customer.

Section 2. Two students and an instructor were talking about an assignment, discussing
the research methods and who does what part of the work.

Section 3. There was a description of a wildlife park.

Questions: Filling in a table of facilities, multiple choice questions, labeling of the layout
of the facility.

Section 4. Don’t remember.

Reading test

Passage 1. An article about a biography of a genius, his contributions to science, and his
life experience ( in other studies such as medicine and his hobbies and marriage. )

Passage 2. The famous swap chocolate experiment, analysis of behavior and


cognition of children and what affects it. The experiment was to put 2 boxes in a room, a
boy places chocolate in one, leaves the room, then the chocolate is moved to the other

IELTS tests in Turkey and Syria – October 2010


(Academic Module)
IELTS exams in Turkey and Syria were the same, so we are told by H and S, who took
their tests in these countries. Here is what we know:

Listening test

Section 1. A woman who wanted to book a hotel for her birthday party called to get
information about hotels.
Section 2. A female presenter was describing changes in a shopping mall that were
related to flowers and different sections in a shop for fertilizers, other gardening supplies,
etc.

Questions: there was a map of the mall and we were asked to label locations on the map.

Section 3. A student was describing the resources she used and the problems she had
while writing her dissertation. She was providing information about different sections of
her thesis.

Section 4. A university lecturer was talking about history of time measurement and
different instruments that were used for measuring time with their respective problems.

Reading test

Passage 1. Agriculture and different methods of farming, including agro-chemical


farming and genetically modified crops versus organic farming.

Question: filling in gaps, multiple choice questions and Y/N/NG.

Passage 2. Paleontology and a database of fossils and their related problems.

Questions: headings matching and sentence completion.

Passage 3. Memory and different techniques of memorizing things, including history of


each technique.

Questions: filling in gaps, multiple choice questions and Y/N/NG.

Writing test

Writing Task 1 (a report)

There was a graph comparing birth and death rates in one European country between the
years 1950 and 2010, plus a future prediction in 40 years.

Writing Task 2 (an essay)

These days many people leave their county to work abroad and take their family with
them. Do you think benefits of this outweigh disadvantages in terms of family
development?

Listening test

Section 1. A conversation between a man, who wanted to register for a camping site, and
a female officer.
Questions: filling in the gaps in a registration form (name, address and a telephone
number), filling in the map some information about the camping site, multiple choice
question (multiple answers) about the 3 activities available.

Section 2. A man was providing information about a charity organization.

Questions: table completion, sentence completion.

Section 3: A discussion between Simon and Anna about a course in International


Relation studies.

Questions: multiple choice questions (one answer only), multiple choice question
(multiple answers), matching 4 given courses with their associated benefits.

Section 4. A university lecturer was talking about business ethic.

Reading test

Passage 1. How to become an expert?


Questions: flow chart completion, T/F/NG, summary (sentence completion).

Passage 2. Antarctic’s climate change.


Questions: Matching information, multiple choice question (single answer), T/F/NG.

There were 4 pie charts describing the results of a survey by a university about the
opinion of full-time and part-time students about its services (the services were IT
support offered and opening hours).

Writing Task 2 (an essay)

Pollution and other environmental damage are inevitable results when a country is
developing and growing its wealth. To what extent you agree or disagree?

Section 2. A man was describing an island and mentioning several details about the place.

Section 3. A tutor was advising a student about the structure and contents of his proposal
(introduction, body, conclusion, etc).

Section 4. A man was describing whales and dolphins and the conditions they live in.

Reading test
Passage 1. About sleeping after lunch (day nap).

Passage 2. About various birds.

Passage 3. About e-learning and its usage in companies, its advantages and
disadvantages.

Writing test

Writing Task 1 (a report)

There were 2 bar charts that illustrated the influence of bedroom TV and computer on
children’s scores in the following subjects: reading, writing, mathematics.

Writing Task 2 (an essay)

Some people believe that tourists should accept social and environmental responsibility
while others believe that tourists should not accept any responsibility at all. To what
extent do you agree or disagree?

IELTS exam in India was described by S as follows:

Listening test

Section 1. A conversation between a holiday company’s executive and a lady named


Janet.

Questions: Janet’s address, phone number (filling in the gaps), multiple choice questions
about prizes / coupons, date of the prize announcement, type of prize, type of activity
preferred by Janet’s teenage children (surfing), type of place Janet prefers to spend her
holiday in, type of activity Janet likes to do on a holiday with her husband.

Section 2. Description of Woodside Hotel.

Questions: when it opened, how many branches it has, how much it costs to purchase
membership, discounts for members, special offers. Then there were 2 questions to select
from answers in a box which restaurant has particular facilities.

Section 3. A talk between Jack and Lee about joining different universities. Lee likes
journalism as a profession.
Questions: Why Lee has chosen that particular university, what facilities are there, what
are Jack’s interests (science), what facilities are there in Jack’s college campus.

Section 4. A flowchart describing the making of rubber. How it’s collected, transferred,
preserved in acid, manually pressed to drain water, smoked, sold.

Questions: filling in the gaps, the questions were about people who
used rubber and for what purpose. In chronological order first Brazilians made rubber
balls, then Europeans invented vulcanization to make rubber smooth and elastic, then car
tires boosted the industry and the last invention of synthetic rubber was made by
Germans.
 
Reading test

Passage 1. Koalas in Australia.

Questions: Multiple choice (A, B, C or D), Yes/No/Not Given, filling in gaps (no more
than 2 words).

Passage 2. About a collapse of a steel bridge in London.

Questions: Multiple choices (select the correct opinion of an engineer from the given
choices).

Passage 3. About the correct communication of information.


 
Writing test

Writing task 1 (a report)

There were two bar graphs comparing employment of elderly males and females in
Belgium, USA, Japan and Australia.

Writing task 2 (an essay)

People often think about creating an ideal society, but most of the times fail in making
this happen. What is your opinion about an ideal society? How can we create an ideal

There was a bar chart that compared reasons why students would choose a British

These days an increasing number of developing countries are improving their tourism
industries. Why do you think this is the case? Is this a positive or a negative

Passage 1. About dinosaurs and how they were discovered.
