Knowledge Management and Competitive Advantage in Indian Context
Abstract
Organizations operate in all areas through people and it is their contribution
which determines success and it is their skills and knowledge which need to be cultivated and then leveraged to create competitive advantage. The development of sustainable competitive advantage is a vital management function and an important requirement in the nurturing of a knowledge creating environment to enable the organization to exploit and develop resources better than rivals and create sufficient knowledge to address the Indian industry’s future success factors. This paper has outlines this perspective on knowledge and examined the way it characterize knowledge sharing processes. It analyses the extent, strategy and imperatives of knowledge management in Indian companies and the critical factors for successful KM implementation for knowledge sharing purposes. What emerged from the analysis is the importance of the concept of knowledge sharing. Knowledge management systems are dedicated to retaining and leveraging knowledge. This study indicates that the benefits of KM programmes are quite positive and the role of information technology systems in the sharing of knowledge is likely to be somewhat limited. Accordingly, the research findings indicate that KM could improve organisational and managerial as well as financial aspects of an organisation. The results indicate that more Indian organisations need to consider the strengths of KM, and implement a formal KM strategy. The primary thrust of this paper is to inspect the knowledge management (KM) practices of two organizations and discuss the commonalties based on a grounded theory approach. The results of this research efforts are intended to show some of the critical success factors in implementation of KM that successful organizations used to manage their knowledge. This KMS study will help other organizations as they embark on their KM journey. Keywords: Knowledge Management; Critical Success Factors, KM Benefits, Competitive Advantage.
