N,lCi6 en Santa Fe el S de abnl de 1912. Miembro de una familia humiloc. Amadeo el padre, [osefina la madre. Eran 6 hijos; cuarrc mujeres y dos varones. Su fuerte inclinacion por [a musica se manifesto mucho antes de haber aprendido a leer. Entonces sus padres 10 enviaron a estudiar piano con Esperanza Lothringer en su ciudad natal. Guasravino sue]e decirme: "Muv pequefio aur -, , cuando ofa (I Esperanza tocar e! piano, dejaba de jugar, abandonaba todo y me acercaba pam sentarme en el swell) y escuchar con total attencion."

Una beca para completar estudios musicales en e] Conservatorio Nacional 10 hizo trasladarse a Buenos Aires. Llegc el 28 de agosto de 1938. Se instalc definirivamente en capital y vive desde hace muchos afios en el barrio de Belgrano. Es timido, solitario, inquieto. Es delgado. muv cuidado, IllUY culto. Sc interest porln ciencia can much.o deleite. Es una persona lucida, sensible y emocionable: sobre rode per 10 que lc sugtcre la naturaleza.

Me dijo en febrero ultimo: "Cuandc leo una poesia que me llcga, me commociono rnucho; contorsiona todo mi ClII::rpo, vibro rcralmenre, aparecen lagnmas en mis ojos muy fnerte ' Entonces tomo un papei pentagrarnado y escribo las notas. La melodfa surge facilmente. cifro los bajos. Todo cs rnuv rapido, no puedo parar. .. es como si estuviera posefdo. De pronto, cuando me dov cuenra de que cnconr-c 10 que querfa, me pongo de pie, haze aestos. camino, day vuelras. rio o limo, y dov gracias a Dios. Guastavino no haec vida social. Muy pocos veces recibe genre. Vive soil) y aSI ha vivido cas! web su vida.

CARLOS GUASTAVINO

Carlos Guastavino was born in Santa Fe (Argentina) Oil the 5t.h of April 1912, to a bumble family. His father W8S Amadeo; his mother: was [osetina. There were six children-four girls and two boys. His strong inclination for music showed itself long before he learned to read. His parents sent him to study piano with Esperanza Lothringer in his native city. Guastavino tells me: "As a very small child, when Esperanza played the

piano, I would abandon whatever I

doing and 1 come near to listen with total attention."

A scholarship to continue his musical studies at the national conservatory brought Guastavino to Buenos Aires. He arrived the 28th of August 1938 and esrnbhshed himself permancnrlv in the capital. For man)' years now he has lived in the Belcrano section. He is timid, reclusive. restless. He is slender, well-kept. very cultured. 1-102 has maintained an interest in science. He is lucid, sensitive, and emotional, especially for what nature suggests to him. He is moved by plants, flowers, trees. He told me once that he cannot ben to see (l tree being cut down; this causes him great pain. He is very sensitive to poetry'. Last Februarv he told me, "When I read poetry that touches me, I become very agitated, my whole body contorts, I vibrate totally, and tears appear in Illy eves. It's very strong! I then take the manuscript paper and write the notes. Themelody comes easily; everything is very quick; I cannot stop.i.it's as if j were possessed. suddenly, when 1 become ,1W,1I"C- that I have fmlnd what I wanted, I stand, make gestures, walk, go in circles, iau,t;b or cry, and give thanks to God. Guastavino does not socialize and seldom receives rucsrs. He lives alone, as he h,IS most of his life. l-lis passion is music. He has written hundreds of works L .. )1" 1ll<:IIlV Instruments-for orchestra, chamber ensemble, and voice. He has always composed alone, at dawn. He starr- ,I" four in the morning and stops at ten or eleven. Guastavino does not espouse the new structures in music. the 'avant-garde.' or the twelve-tone system. In his compositions he uses traditional harmony "which gave such good results to Bach, Mozart, and Schumarm," be asserts. Guasravino prefers this language, this \\,,·1), of speaking. This posture differentiates him from almost all

Born in the Dominican Republic, ULlSES ESPAILLAT has performed with various opera companies across the United States, including the Pittsburgh Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Chautauqua Opera and Westchester Opera. He was 3 winner in the Beniamino Gigli voice competition and the lsmacle Voltolirii singing contest, where he was awarded the gold medal in

Mantova, ltalv. In the U. S. Mr. Espaillat 11"01:-:; successfully competed in [he American Opera Auditions and the

Metropolitan Opera Regional Auditions. He mack his European recital debut in 1989 at the Salle Moliere in Lyons, France. His recital of Spanish songs at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York was highly praised by the Nc·w Y01-L. Times. Mr. Espai.llat has also performed in rnanv zarzuelas in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. He has studied voice wid) Claudia Pima in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and at the Academia Vcrdiana ill. Italy with the renowned tenor Carlo Bcrgcnai.
