Readings review:
Murch & Chion

Why was Europe not enthusiastic about the coming

of Sound?
Musique concrete - (1947) “Music” from sounds that
exist, rather than from what is written down and
played with musical instruments.
The goal of sound in film is “...to reassociate those
sounds with images of objects or situations that
were different... than the objects or situations that
gave birth to the sounds in the first place.”

The “shadow” finally dances free.... Think of an
object, and it’s “shadow” being its sound.
Synchresis: Once it has danced free, sound can
re-attach itself (ax chopping wood = bat striking ball)

More... Film Music
Pushing the Boundaries in your own work

The Music Video Model:

• Recorded music is blasted onto the set by a

location sound person.

• Film or video is shot to match the pacing and

style of the music.

The Musical!
Music and dance intregral to the story--function to
advance the plot (or, are the plot!).
Westside Story (1961) won 10 Oscars.
Seems hokey now, but was groundbreaking
because it was shot on location, dealt with
urban issues, immigration, street gangs, etc.
There is no real difference between Westside Story
and the Radiohead music video...

Other Traditions

For example: Lagaan (Bollywood - 2001)

Uses song & dance to tell a story, but...
largely unconcerned with plausibility of actors
singing, and with “realism”of sound or sonic space.
Is the dominant film industry in the world. Yes, you
read that right!
