Wednesday, May 4, 2011 Readings review: Murch & Chion
Why was Europe not enthusiastic about the coming
of Sound? Musique concrete - (1947) “Music” from sounds that exist, rather than from what is written down and played with musical instruments. The goal of sound in film is “...to reassociate those sounds with images of objects or situations that were different... than the objects or situations that gave birth to the sounds in the first place.”

For example: Lagaan (Bollywood - 2001)
Uses song & dance to tell a story, but... largely unconcerned with plausibility of actors singing, and with “realism”of sound or sonic space. Is the dominant film industry in the world. Yes, you read that right!
