Language Arts Standard Two

All teachers should model effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills during their
direct and indirect instructional activities. The most important communicator in the classroom
is the teacher, who should model English language arts skills.

Description:

The artifact for language arts standard two is a PowerPoint presentation created and
presented to high school students in preparation for their Race Topic Presentations. Included
is the lesson plan for the activity along with the model PowerPoint about De Facto and De Jure
Segregation. Before students began working on their projects, they were given all of the
handouts for the assignment and then I modeled a presentation to them along with giving
them notes about the structure of their presentations.

Meeting the standard:

This artifact displays modeling techniques to use in the classroom. By modeling this particular
item, I demonstrated how students should speak, the correct amount enthusiasm, the
importance of information and grammatical accuracy, along with listening and facilitation skills
while holding a discussion.

How this demonstrates my development as a teacher:

The model PowerPoint demonstrates two things about my teaching. First of all, it
demonstrates that I am able to perform quality research and present topics using engaging
materials. Secondly, it shows that I am able to visualize my expectations for student based on
what I expect from myself. My model PowerPoint shows a complete example of what I
wanted. Before this model was presented, students had many questions about what their
PowerPoint needed to include. After I modeled the presentations and the PowerPoint, there
was little question as to the requirements.
