FRAMEWORK OF THE LARYNX:
Musculo-cartilaginous structure located at the
superior end of the trachea.
 Composed of 9 pieces of
cartilage:
 3 paired & 3 unpaired.
 Bound by ligaments and
lined with mucous
membrane
Laryngeal cartilages:

3 paired: 3 unpaired:
 Arytenoid  Thyroid

cartilage cartilage
 Corniculate  Cricoid

 Cuniform cartilage
 epiglottis
Hyoid bone:
 Its not a part of larynx.
 Horseshoe shape
 Does not articulate with any other bone.
 Located superior to thyroid cartilage.
 Connected superiorly to the skull by various
muscles.
 It’s the union between the tongue & the
laryngeal structure.
Cavity of larynx

 It is a constricted tube with a smooth &

reasonably aerodynamic surface.
 Aditus laryngis: entrance (entry to the larynx
from the pharynx).
 Vestibule: first cavityof the larynx. It’s the
space between aditus & ventricular folds.
It is wide at the aditus & narrows at ventricular
folds.
 Lateral walls: aryepiglottic folds
 Posterior walls: membrane covering of the
arytenoid cartilages.
 Rima vestibule: space b/w false VF.
