Synopsis

On
Traffic Light Control System

Objective

• The aim of this project is to automate all the functionality of the present
traffic light management system more efficiently, by regulating the traffic
lights based on the traffic intensity rather than fixed counter system.

Current System

• In the current system the traffic lights are managed by a fixed counter
system.
• Each four cross lane has a fixed counter system for its each lane, which has
been fixed from the analysis of the previous history of the traffic intensity of
that lane.

Problems in the Current System

• Less flexible as the traffic always has to wait for the same period of time. No
matter what is the intensity the traffic.
• No method to switch on the other lane traffic for which traffic light is red,
although the lane for which traffic light is still green has no more traffic.
Former traffic has to wait for the counter to go zero.
• No method to stop the traffic if some VIP or emergency traffic (Ambulance,
Police etc.) has to cross. Traffic police control the traffic in this special case.
• This system also initiates the accidents as traffic doesn’t like to wait, and
most of the traffic cross the traffic light.
• Present system can not stop the traffic to cross the stop line.

Solution Proposed in the New System

• New system includes the present system of controlling the traffic, but the
duration of counter for a particular lane is based on the traffic intensity of
that lane.
• It allocates maximum allowable counter time for each lane depending on the
analysis of the previous history of the traffic for that lane.
• It includes a flexible mechanism to automate the traffic system to allow the
special traffic (VIP, Ambulance, etc.) to pass.
• Special feature for the particular lane where the traffic cross the stop line.
Such lane traffic will not be allowed to pass till they take their vehicle back
from the stop line.
• Since the traffic does not have to wait, so the chances of accident will also
decreases.
