1986 OREGON STATE MEN'S TRACK & FIELD ROSTER
400: This will be a very weak event for the Beavers with no proven runners
available at this distance. Junior Jeff Tressler (47.4) has the best time
which he recorded in junior college at Clackamas CC. Other available athletes
for the 400 include Marc Stewart (49.88), Brad Carman (50.9) and Tod Whitzel
(NT) and Tod Perkins (NT).
JUMPS: OSU probably has more depth in the long jump and triple jump than
any area on the sqaud. Guy Oekerman (24-2), Babajide Akanbi (23-8), Robb
Thomas (23-1) and Dave Turnbull (22-10 1/4) are the long jumpers and Barrington
Lewis (51-10 1/2) is a transfer who gives the Beavers a quality triple jumper
to replace graduated Kenny Taylor. Turnbull (45-4 1/2) will return for his
second year as a triple jumper and he should improved in 1986 The Beavers have
depth in the high jump with Turnbull (7-0 1/4), Dan Franklin (6-10), Scott
Franklin (6-8) and Thomas (6-9) available.
POLE VAULT: Another position of strength with Greg Likens (17-6), one of
the better vaulters in the Pacific-JO returning, along with Nick Till (16-5)
and Dave Collins (14-6).
SHOT PUT: The loss of Chris Waltman via graduation has left the Beavers
hurting in this event. OSU has only two shot putters who have gone over 40
feet--freshman Corey Warren (45-6) and John Thomas (43-6).
DISCUS: Like the shot put, the discus will be totally inexperienced and
with only one person who has thrown over 160 feet--John Thomas at 161-5. The
only other competitors available are Corey Warren, Glenn Hamilton and Bill
Morrow, none of whom have registered a collegiate mark in the discus.
JAVELIN: Senior Mike Pedersen has a best of 245-6 in this event and is
capable of improving that mark if he can stay clear of injuries which have
hampered him the past two seasons. Only two other competitors are available in
the javelin--Brad Bales (208-0) and Mike Twist (172-4).
HAMMER: John Thomas threw the hammer 190-8 last year as a freshman and he
could very well break the school record of 207-2 this year. John's improvement
has been remarkable and he is easily the most improved athlete in one year's
time on the OSU squad. Once again, John Thomas will have no expereinced
teammates to join him in the hammer ring. Other competitors scheduled to throw
the hammer this year include Corey Warren, Glenn Hamilton and Bill Morrow.
Inexperience is the key word in describing the OSU Men's track team. Coach
Chuck McNeil can point to only three athletes--Karl Van Calcar, Greg Likens and
John Thomas--as athletes going into the season capable of scoring big in Pac-1O
competition. McNeil must depend on several youngsters and newcomers
developing quickly for the Beavers to be a competitive dual meet team.

OREGON STATE WOMEN'S OUTLOOK
Oregon State's women's track team has taken a step beyond rebuilding.
The Beavers though still young, have the numbers and experience to improve
in 1986. And it is very likely that Chuck McNeil's team could start its
move up the ladder if things go just as planned.
Returning to make things look bright are five seniors and all five
will be counted on to make major contributions to the Beaver cause.
Leading the way is three-year letter winner and last year's team MVP, Karl
Weston, who will be one of the premier hurlders in the conference this
season. Weston was second at the NorPac's in the 100 hurldes at 14.14
and fourth in the 400's at 1:01.15. The school record holder in the
latter event, she will also be a factor on the Beaver sprint relays and
has even long jumped for OSU.
On paper, the weights and hurdles are OSU'S main strengths mainly
because of experience and depth. Johnson will have support in the shot
and discus from Nygren, and Hawaii state record holding shot putter Sarah
Bryant as well as sophomore letter-winner Kristi Wreath. Wreath had bests
of 42-01/4 in the shot and 145-0 in the discus in her first season with
the Beavers in '85.
For Weston, help will come in doses. The first dose is of
experience. Behind Weston's talents will be Vicki Anderson, another
senior, and lettermen Kelly Kaser and Jennifer Stark. Anderson will run
both the 100's and intermediates for the Beaver team and Kaser and Stark
will likely specialize in the intermediates and 100 respectively when they
compete in that event.
The Oregon State distance team should also help provide points to the
Beaver cause. Cross country stars Sue Martineau and Peggy Murri help beef
up a distance crew somewhat depleted by the loss of Kathy Knowlton and
Karen Mathison. Martineau will run everything from the 1500 to the 3000
and Murri will handle distances ranging from the 800 up. It is a
formidable one-two punch but there is not a great deal of depth or
experience in support. Transfer Heather Cusack and sophomore Alison Ernst
along with frosh Kristine Schaefer will add some dimension to the cast
which could develop into a solid group by the season's end.
Kaser is OSU's top returnee in the 400 and will probably run the 800
as well this season. Schaefer, who was fourth at state in the AA 1500
last year, will also be counted on for depth in the longer sprints. Stark
could also figure in the 400 fo the Beavers but will likely be one of the
Beaver mainstays in the 100 and 200. Weston can also be an effective
sprinter when needed and McNeil has beefed up his depth chart in the
sprints with some new faces.
Freshmen Lisa Byhre, Cathy Strong and Monique Walters give the Beaver
team more sprint depth then it has seen in several years. That trio
should help make up for the loss of premier prospect Pam Quails, whom the
Beavers seemingly had in tow but who opted for WSU instead. All three are
in the 12.0-12.5 range in the 100 and Waiters had a 25.5 200 time in high
school in Millersville, Maryland. Byhre was an All-Stater at Beaverton
and Strong was her teams' captain and MVP at Wilson.
Waiters will also be used in the triple jump, where she joins letter
winner Jean Lee, OSU's top returning triple jumper. The long jump could
be a much improved event for the Beavers. Lee and Weston bring experience
to that event and Byher, frosh Heidi East out of Crescent Valley High
School and Karissa Pedersen should contribute.
Anderson is the main OSU force in the high jump but again, new faces
will be a factor before the season is through. Jessica Cortell, Kim
Fenton and Liz Hoyt join with transfer Kathy Sanders to give McNeil a
strong nucleous in that event.
A big blow to the Beaver team was the loss of Meredith Howell, who won
the NorPac heptathlon title two years ago, red shirted last season but
failed to return to the team this year. She will be hard for the Beavers
to replace in an event that has seen OSU win two of the last three NorPac
championships.
