Biodiesel has many roles to solve many problems that caused by fuel production
limitedness because it has many advantages such as biodegradable properties, low
toxicity, zero content of sulfur and aromatic compounds, and it has higher flash point
than the other fuels so it becomes a safer material. In the biodiesel manufacturing,
enzymes are potential catalyst because of their good properties (good performance in
regioselectivity, stereoselectivity, biodegradable, etc.). However, it has many limitations
such as zero reusability indication, unstable toward high temperature, organic solutions,
acids, bases, and mechanical influences. One ways to handle these problems is to
immobilize enzymes onto the suitable solid supports. Poly(ether sulfone) (PES) is a class
of polymer that has sulfone and ether groups that have good resistant properties and it can
interact with the enzyme such as lipase by hydrophilic interaction. PES modification is
one of the ways to form covalent bonds with the enzyme then the leaching out of lipase
from the solid support is prevented. Aminated PES was synthesized by three big steps,
they are synthesis of PES, nitration of PES, and reduction of PES-NO2. PES-NH2
synthesized is brown powder with the Infra red characteristic peak in 1320.1, 1187.1,
1236.5, and double band in 3077.4 cm-1 wave number. Based on spectrum analysis by
spectroscopy NMR, PES-NH2 is successful formed by PES synthesis using Dean Stark
trap and Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis (MAOS) methods. However, nitro
functional groups which are not aminated are still presence. Aminated PES is applicable
as solid support of lipase to carry out transesterification reaction of triglyceride to
improve biodiesel production.
