Hands are parts of our body which are the most common source of infection. For
that reason, we have to wash our hands to prevent infection. A research held in IOWA
University Hospital, shows that only 3 of 5 doctors from the ICU wash their hands,
consequently many patients in that hospital were infected. This incident shows that
although hand-washing is one of the basic principles in modern medicine, its practice has
not been really established and this could lead to serious problem.
The study was conducted in order to analyze the knowledge of medical students
in FK USU who were administered as university student in year 2006 and 2008
regarding hand-washing. The study was designed in descriptive-analytic manner. Ninety
students were selected from the total population of 850 students. Samples were
distributed evenly between the year of student admision. Data were collected by utilizing
questionaires and analyzed using chi-square test.
Result of the study indicated that knowledge of medical students in FK USU who
were admited in 2006 regarding hand-washing are good (35,6%). On the other hand, the
result of medical students in FK USU who was admited in 2008 were average (64,4%).
With p value= 0,191 (p>0,1). This suggested that was no significance difference of
knowledge between both groups.
Given the findings, it is strongly encouraged that the faculty should be more
active and improve the facilities supporting the hand-washing practice in order for it to
be applied daily for everyone since becoming a student untill internship in hospital.
