Resistor Variation & Matching

Types of Mismatch Run to run variations(??)

Global Differences in thickness, doping etc.

Systematic Random variations between devices Run to run variations in absolute R value:(????) 20% Appr. can be problematic for termination, bias current etc

Best Case:Make circuit depends only on ratios

e.g. Use feedback to control Op-amp gain with careful layout, can get 0.1-1% matching

Systematic Variations from Layout

Example
L

R
We need to match R and 2R, How to make it?

2L

2R

Cont...
Make it double in exactly same way

So,use unit element instead

Current Direction

2R?

R

Current direction on resistor matching?

Doping is done at an angle Consequently effective doping is different on both ends Resistance varies as one move to other side. So,in 2R resistor

the effect of resistor change is canceled out where as in R its not Again Mismatch

Solution ???

Cont...
Take unit element as even no. of segment which will

cancel the effect of resistor change due to change in Current Direction

0.5*R2+ R R1 0.5*R2- R

MOS Resistors
Large value realizable in small area Very large voltage coefficients

Applications MOSFET C filters(Linearization) Biasing

MOS Resistors(Cont.)
Large Area(Compared to FETs) Non-idealities Large run to run variations Temperature coefficient Voltage coefficients(Nonlinear) Avoid them when you can Especially in critical areas e.g. Amplifier feedback networks,Electronic filters,A/D Converters
