CLUTCH

Clutch is a mechanism by which rotary motion from one shaft to another shaft can be transmitted, gradually when desired.

Requirement of good clutch

1. torque transmission (maximum torque transmission) 2. Heat dissipation (proper ventilation & cooling is required, at high temp. coefficient of friction of clutch plate reduced.) 3. Dynamic balancing (important for high speed engines) 4. Vibration damping 5. Size (as smallest as possible to occupy less space) 6. Inertia (minimum inertia, after disengagement it should minimize the rotation) 7. Easy operation

Types of clutches
1. friction clutches(dry type & wet type) single plate clutch multiple plate clutch cone clutch semi centrifugal clutch centrifugal clutch 2. Fluid fly wheel

Principle of friction clutch

Single plate clutch

Advantages of plate clutch over cone clutch

1. With the single plate the gear change is easier because the pedal movement is less here. 2. It does not suffer from binding like cone clutch

Disadvantages
1. More stiffer springs are used, thus more pedal effort is required
