1. Discuss with the girls what media is and some examples of how they use it in their everyday lives. Media is all the tools used to communicate with many people at once. Someexamplesare:books,magazines,newspapers,websites,television,cellphones(text messages,tweets),blogs,socialmedia,advertisements,etc 2. If the girls have not filled in the quiz on page 13, give them a couple minutes to do so, thenreviewtheiranswers.Wereanyofthegirlssurprisedbytheirmediarating? 3. Havethegirlscompletepages1517asagroup,fillingintheirbooksastheydiscusswhat theyread. 4. Askthegirlssharetheiranswerstothequestionsfoundinthecornersofpages6,10,and 46 of their book. We will revisit these questions later in the Journey, so record your answersinyourbook. 5. Again, not just a movie about media, but another example of one media feeding anotherthis time computersfeedingintotelevision.

2. Now,letthegirlsknowthattheywillgettotrytheirhandatbeingdirectorsandfinding their own view. Demonstratehowthegirlscanusetheirhandstomakeanadjustableframe


viewfinderbyformingrightanglesbetweenthumbandforefinger,thenoverlappingthetwoLs tomakearectangularframe.Theycanslidetheframeinforacloseupandoutforalongshot.

3. Pass out the MovieCamera Moves and Moods chart and have the girls walk around the roompracticingthevariouscameramoves. 4. Usingtheinstructionsprovided,thegirlsaregoingtomaketheirownviewfinder. 5. After they make their Directors viewfinder, have them take turns as director. Whenthe

LetthegirlsdecideiftheywanttodothisasonelargegrouporbreakintoTeams(Form2 Teams,ifteamformatischosen). 2. Passoutthesamplesurvey.Tellthegirlsthatthetimeallottedforconductingtheirsurvey is during lunchtime today. Then, ask the girls to consider who they are going to survey duringthattime: a)theirpeerstheotherCadettesonthisJourney;b)theotherGirl Scouts present at the Journey today; c) their friends and family via texting; d) the adult volunteersattheJourneytoday. 3. Seven Layer Dip. Discuss how the girls learned about all the various forms of media todayandnowtheyaregoingtotakealookathowtheyeachareasmallpartofthe bigger MEDIA. Have the girls name three examples of how the statements listed on page 18 are true: examplesthatmaycometomindthemovie,Julie&Julia;Therecent
story about a homeless man became a voice over celebrity because of a blog posting); and NewscastersandMeteorologiststellsuseverydaythatwecanfindmoreinformationontheir blog,ortochecktheirstationswebsiteforuptotheminuteinformation...

2. Have the girls read pages 5666 in their book. Have the girls fill in pages 6065, then sharetheiranswerswitheachother. 3. Have the girls sit on the floor in a circle, with their legs crossed in front of them. Explain that sometimes you have to unwind and take care of yourself for a few minutes, and that is what we are going to do now.
