FILE SORT RULE

The printer sorts photo data files by their full pathnames in ASCII order.
NOTE: The sorting may fail or be completed improperly if multiple same full pathnames exist. (the existence is not allowed under normal MS-DOS environment.) If the file names in a memory card are other than MS-DOS file names, the printer sorts the files by MS-DOS file names.

DATE DATA ACQUISITION

The printer acquires the date and time data of each photo data file according to the priority list given below. 1. 2. 3. From a digital camera. Acquires date and time data conforms to digital camera standard format (Exif). From a PC or other external device. Acquires date and time data (timestamp of the file) assigned by the file system compatible with MS-DOS. Fixed values (1 January 1980 00:00:00)

VALID IMAGE SIZES

Available image sizes for stand-alone print are as follows: Horizontal: 80 X 9200 (pixel) Vertical: 80 Y 9200 (pixel)

MAXIMUM NUMBER OF PHOTO DATA FILES

The printer can handle up to 999 photo data files. If 1000 or more photo data files are recorded in a memory card, these files are sorted in accordance with the file sort rule of the printer, and photo data with photo numbers 1 to 999 are used as valid data. (the printer displays 999 as the total number of photo data files even if the actual number of files exceeds 999.) When photo data files assigned numbers over 999 are specified to be printed on the camera, they can be printed unless the total number of files exceeds 999.

Note that the acquired date and time of each photo data file is not necessarily the exact date of shooting the photo. The date and time data can be updated after shooting by digital camera's calendar setting, post-processing or restoring of the photo data. If the data has been updated, the printer acquires the updated date and time information.

DATE RANGE
The printer can handle the following range of date. If photo data files have date and time information outside the range, the printer cannot sort files correctly. 1 January 1980 00:00:00 to 31 December 2099 23:59:59

FILE SORT
The printer sorts all the photo data files in a memory card using their full pathnames (such as \DCIM\100EPSON\EPSN0000.JPG) and assigns numbers to them. Because the number assignment rule is specific to the printer, the numbers assigned by the printer do not necessarily match the numbers assigned by a camera.

1.6.2 Backup Function

PictureMate PM260/270 and PM290 offer the backup function that allows the user to save data stored in a memory card into a medium inserted in an external USB storage device, such as MO drive and CD-R/DVD-R drive. Furthermore, PictureMate PM290, equipped with a built-in CD/DVD combo drive, offers direct backup to a CD in the drive. The details of the backup functions are as follows.

BACKUP USING BUILT-IN CD/DVD COMBO DRIVE (PM 290 ONLY)

Battery-driven backup is also available. However, when backing up files to multiple media, the battery is required to be sufficient to print one of the media and its index sheet.

BACKUP USING EXTERNAL DEVICE

When data size to be backed up exceeds the destination medium capacity and the medium does not support divided backup, a warning message appears on the LCD. When the destination medium is unformatted or when the printer cannot recognize the format type, formatting the medium is automatically carried out.

BACKUP FUNCTION OUTLINE

Selecting all photo data at a time or selecting some photo data randomly in a memory card is available. Automatically divides data to be backed up in case the data size exceeds the destination medium capacity so that the data can be saved to multiple media consecutively. (depending on the media type, this function does not work.) Creates a backup folder automatically in the destination medium each time a backup is carried out. Direct printing the data backed up in a medium is available. When a backup is finished, the backed up data files are automatically deselected.
NOTE: The printer does not back up files other than photo data files.

Revision A Writing Format for CD-R Media

Writing to CD-R media is made in multisession type (Model 1) and ISO-9660compliant format. One session is created by each backup. Files or folders whose name includes an unsupported character code or is too long (file/folder name must be less than 8 characters, and the extensions must be less than 3 characters), the names are automatically changed as explained below. File name: EPSONXXX.JPG Folder name: EPDIRXXX
NOTE1: 001-999 numbers are applied to XXX in ascending order. 2: An unsupported character-code used in the extension is replaced with an underbar. 3: During a single backup operation, the number of automatic change of file/ folder names is limited to 999 times. When it exceeds, no more files/folders that contain an unsupported character-code cannot be backed up. 4: If a file or folder name that is automatically changed due to an unsupported character code is already exists in the medium, the change is cancelled and the file or folder cannot be backed up.

Remarks
DOS/Windows-formatted MO is recommended. Reformatting a pre-formatted MO is impossible. MOs formatted in an unreadable format such as Macintosh HFS or Windows NTFS are not recognized. Backup becomes possible after the MOs are reformatted. CD-RW media cannot be used due to the difference of recording method. Backup to a CD-R once burned using a device other than the printer is not guaranteed. DVD+R, DVDRW, DVD-RAM media cannot be used due to the difference of recording method. Backup to a DVD-R once burned using a device other than the printer is not guaranteed.

2.2 Printer Mechanism

This product employs DC motors and stepping motors for driving mechanisms. The following table describes the motor types and their applications. Table 2-2. Motors
Motor Name CR Motor Type DC motor with brushes DC motor with brushes PF Motor Applications/Functions Drives the carriage noiselessly. Controlled by the CR linear scale and CR encoder. Drives the PF roller to transport paper accurately, and to eject paper. The carriage speed and position are precisely detected by the PF Encoder and the PF Scale attached on a high-precision gear, and the encoder control the PF motor in order to improve the paper feeding accuracy. Drives the paper feed mechanism, and drives pump and wiper in the Ink System. Since this motor is a stepping motor, no scale or photosensor is required in order to detect driving statuses of the motor.

Revision A
CR Measurement Sequence To set the appropriate drive current value according to the variation of the CR mechanical load, the mechanical load is measured in a CR measurement sequence and saved into the EEPROM at the power-on sequence or IC change sequence. A fatal error will occur if too much load is applied to the CR drive system. The above control and sequences correct the drive current value of the CR motor according to not only the mechanical load but also the variations of the motor and like. In addition, the resultant CR drive current value is used to calculate a heating value, and when the specified heating value is reached, wait time is provided per CR path for printing.

2.2.1 Carriage Mechanism

The Carriage mechanism consists of the Carriage unit, Carriage motor (CR motor), CR encoder board, PW sensor, Carriage Lock Mechanism (a part of the Cap unit) and others.

2.2.1.1 Carriage Mechanism

The specifications of the drive force of the mechanism; CR motor are listed in the table below. Table 2-3. CR Motor Specifications

CR Scale

CR Motor CR Encoder Board

Heat Control (Duty limitation) In order to prevent the CR motor from overheating due to the excessive load on the carriage, the temperature of the motor is estimated based on the heating value at regular intervals regardless of the carriage operation. If the estimated temperature exceeds the prescribed value, the motor is put into short suspend mode immediately after the carriage stops. CR Variation Measurement Sequence Electric values of the CR motor are measured and corrected if the values fall outside the prescribed range. This minimizes motor-to-motor electrical variations and improves operating accuracy of the motor.

2.2.1.2 Carriage Home Position Detection

As in the conventional model, the Carriage Home Position is detected using the drive current of the CR Motor and the speed/position signal of the CR linear encoder. The basic home position detection sequence is as described below. 1. 2. After power-on, in order to determine a home position temporarily, the carriage moves rightward a specified number of steps by the load-positioning control. The carriage is then moved leftward as far as it goes and the ASF/Pump motor rotates to unlock the carriage lock. Referring to carriage position data from the temporary home position and the current position acquired with the CR linear encoder, the printer determines whether the carriage is in its home position or not.

2.2.1.3 PW (Paper Width) Detection

The printer is equipped with a PW (paper width) sensor located on the side of the Carriage unit. Information detected by the sensor is used to control the various printer operations. The operating principle of the sensor is described below. Detection and Control Method The PW sensor causes electric current according to the amount of light reflected off the target position. The printer judges paper position (size) based on the electric values obtained by the PW sensor and the positions of the CR and PF motors. The threshold value of the PW sensor is the dark voltage measured at three points every time the printer is turned on, and stored into the EEPROM. The voltage output from the sensor is low when paper exists, and high when paper does not exist. Threshold > detected voltage: paper exists Threshold < detected voltage: no paper PW detection by the PW sensor is used for the following controls. Off-paper printing prevention control In order to prevent printing on off-paper areas (directly on the Paper Guide) especially when borderless print is selected with wrong sized paper, the left and right edges of paper which is supposed to exist are checked by the PW sensor before and during printing. Paper leading edge detection control Top and bottom edges of paper are detected by the PW sensor for borderless printing. Off-paper range control In borderless printing, paper edges (left and right, or all edges depending on the setting) are detected by the PW sensor in order to check the paper size. According to the detected paper size, the image is enlarged so that it becomes slightly larger than the paper size and printed without margins. Furthermore, after the enlargement, the amount of image printed off the paper is fine-tuned for each print mode.

3*. When the printer judges that the carriage is in its home position, the carriage is moved leftward in order to check that the carriage is unlocked. If the printer determines that the carriage is not in its home position, the carriage is moved rightward a specified number of steps again, the Print head is covered with the cap, and a retry of the carriage home detection is carried out. 4. After detecting the unlock status of the carriage, the carriage is moved rightward. When prescribed conditions are met during the rightward movement of the carriage, the carriage is stopped and the stop position is determined as the home position. Once the home position is set, the carriage position is always monitored to control the CR motor.

5.

NOTE *: When any one of the following statuses is detected, the printer causes a fatal error (home seek error). There is an obstruction on the carriage path. The carriage lock is not released. The carriage home detection has failed for the second time in a row.

2.2.3 Paper Loading Mechanism

The Paper Loading Mechanism loads paper on the ASF and feeds paper to the PF roller. Since the ASF motor drives the pump in the Ink System in addition to work for paper feeding, a clutch mechanism is employed to switch between the two operations. (Refer to Figure 2-5.) The paper feeding operation is carried out as described below. 1. Except when feeding paper, the clutch is engaged with the Switch Lever so that the ASF/Pump motor drive force is transmitted to the Pump Mechanism, not to the LD roller. The Hopper is kept lowered, and the Paper Back Lever is in its highest position. When paper feeding starts, the ASF/Pump motor rotates counterclockwise. The motor drive force is transmitted to the Switch Lever via Combination Gear 32.9,11.2,8, Spur Gear 9, Spur Gear 8 in that order. The Switch Lever moves and disengages from the clutch. By the disengagement, the ASF/Pump motor drive force is transmitted to the LD roller. As the ASF/Pump motor rotates clockwise, the LD roller starts rotating and the drive force is transmitted to the Hopper Cam Shaft via the route as shown in Figure 2-4. The cam moves and the Paper Back Lever is lowered. As the Hopper Cam Shaft keeps rotating, the cam that presses down the Hopper Assy against torsion spring tension is released causing the Hopper to pop up. The friction between the LD roller and the Hopper Pad feeds paper into the printer. As the LD roller makes one turn, the paper reaches the LD roller and the Hopper Cam Shaft also makes one turn letting the cam press down the Hopper. The Paper Back Lever returns to its highest position preventing the next paper from being fed. As the ASF/Pump motor keeps rotating, the Switch Lever contacts with a protrusion of the clutch and the lever is engaged with the clutch. The engagement shuts off the ADF/Pump motor drive force transmission toward the LD roller.

When paper is fed from the ASF, it is detected by the PE sensor, and the leading edge of the paper then travels as far as the front-center part of the paper guide. Then, in order to take up any slackness in the paper and to detect center position of the paper width, the paper is moved back toward the ASF a number of steps preset according to paper feed mode, and it is then transported once more to the specified starting position inside the front of the paper guide.

2.2.4.2 PF Measurement Sequence

At power-on and when the ink cartridge is replaced, the mechanical load in the paper feed path is measured in order to control electric current applied to the PF motor according to the load. If the mechanical load exceeds a prescribed value, the printer causes a fatal error.

2.2.5 Choke Valve Mechanism

The Choke Valve Mechanism opens/closes the valve located in the Duct Valve Supply Assy in order to drain/shut down ink supplied from the ink cartridge. (Figure 2-8) The operating principle of the Choke Valve Mechanism is described below. Note that the Choke Valve operates only when the ink cartridge is installed. The valve is kept closed when the ink cartridge is not installed. CLOSING THE CHOKE VALVE 1. When the PF motor rotates clockwise, the drive force is transmitted to the cam via the combination gear and the intermittent gear of the Choke Assy. The cam presses down the Lock Lever and the Valve Supply Lever is unlocked. Further rotation of the PF motor makes the cam press down the Valve Supply Lever causing the Magnet Supply Holder to separate from the Duct Valve Supply Assy. Due to the disengagement of the Magnet Supply Holder, the magnetic force that attracts the Choke Valve disappears. Then the Choke Valve is moved to block the ink drain path by the force exerted by a spring. When the cam makes one turn by the rotation of the PF motor, the Lock Lever is moved upward and the Valve Supply Lever is locked. At the same time, the PF motor drive force is shut down by the intermittent gear and the Choke Valve is kept closed.

When the PF motor rotates counterclockwise with the Choke Valve closed, the drive force is transmitted to the cam via the combination gear and the intermittent gear of the Choke Assy. The cam presses down the Lock Lever and the Valve Supply Lever is unlocked. Further rotation of the PF motor makes the cam separate from the Valve Supply Lever bringing the Magnet Supply Holder near the Duct Valve Supply Assy. As the Magnet Supply Holder approaches the Duct Valve Supply Assy, the Choke Valve is attracted by the Magnet Supply Holder and the ink drain path is opened. When the cam makes one turn by the rotation of the PF motor, the Lock Lever is moved upward and the Valve Supply Lever is locked. At the same time, the PF motor drive force is shut down by the intermittent gear, and the Choke Valve is kept opened.

2.2.6.2 Capping Mechanism (Cap Unit)

The Capping Mechanism covers the printhead with the Cap unit to ensure airtightness in the cap allowing ink to be supplied to the printhead properly by means of the ASF/ Pump motor drive force. Furthermore, when the printer is in standby mode or when the printer is off, the mechanism also covers the printhead in order to prevent ink evaporation. The following figure illustrates an overview of the Capping Mechanism operation.

2.2.7 Power-On Sequence

The printer operations from when the printer is turned on until it goes into standby mode are described below. 1. 2. The carriage home position is set. See Carriage Home Position Detection on page 30. The ASF/Pump motor rotates clockwise and the PF motor rotates counterclockwise at the same time in order to initialize the PF encoder and to set the ASF in its standby position. Paper ejection operation is performed and the PE sensor detects whether paper is loaded on the tray. The CR motor rotates to move the carriage to its home position. The PF encoder sets the current carriage position as the home position if the PE sensor detected no paper at Step 2. When the ambient temperature is under 5 C, or when the current date and time is unset, or when the RTC is reset because the printer had been left turned off over 120 hours, the CR motor rotates again to perform 3 cycles of the carriage movement between the home and the left edge in order to ensure proper lubrication of grease. The CR motor rotates clockwise and the carriage moves in order to obtain threshold values of the PW sensor for judging paper presence/absence. The PW sensor located on the carriage performs the detection at three prescribed points, and the threshold value is determined according to the result. The firmware checks the waste ink counter and the tube endurance counter if one of them reaches or near the limit. Then, the ink cartridge detection sequence is performed to activate the Ink System. The PF motor rotates clockwise and counterclockwise to open and close the Choke Valve. When the all required operations are finished, the carriage returns to its home position. And the ASF/Pump motor rotates counterclockwise to lift the Cap unit and lock the carriage, then the printer goes into standby mode.

If initial filling is complete, be careful as ink leakage may occur from the Duct Joint Supply Assy and contaminate the printer and the surroundings. When rotating the Spur Gear 32.9, 11.2 and 8, be careful not to damage the gears. When handling Head FFC, be careful not to damage it. Head FFC damage can lead to faulty printing.

Figure 4-42. Handling of the Tube Holder Spread out the Tube Holder and release the tabs (x2), and remove the Tube Holder. Before proceeding to the next step, prepare some type of tray or the like to receive ink that drains from the Ink Tube of the Duct Joint Supply Assy. Because of a negative pressure applied by the Self-Sealing Valve in the Printhead, removing the Ink Tube from the Tube Joint Supply does hardly cause the discharge of ink as long as the other end of the tube is connected to the Printhead. Once the tube is disconnected from the Printhead, ink is discharged from the tube end that was connected to the Tube Joint Supply.

Housing Use a clean soft cloth moistened with water and wipe off any dirt. If the Housings are stained with ink, use a cloth moistened with neutral detergent to wipe it off. Inside the printer Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any paper dust.

6.1 Overview
This section provides information to maintain the printer in its optimum condition.

6.1.1 Cleaning
This printer has no mechanical components which require regular cleaning. Cleanings described here should be performed as needs arise.
C A U T IO N

Never use chemical solvents, such as thinner, benzine, and acetone, to clean the exterior parts of the printer like the housing. These chemicals may degrade or deteriorate the quality of this product. Be careful not to damage any components when you clean inside the printer. Do not scratch the surface of the PF Roller assembly. Use a soft brush to wipe off dust. Use a soft cloth moistened with dilute alcohol to remove ink stain. When using compressed air products; such as air duster, for cleaning during repair and maintenance, the use of such products containing flammable gas is prohibited.

6.1.2 Service Maintenance

If the product becomes abnormal (missing dot, white banding, etc.) or a maintenance request error occurs, take the following actions to clear the error.

6.1.2.1 Head Cleaning

The printer can activate head cleaning from the control panel, printer driver, or the adjustment program.
A D J U S T M E N T R E Q U IR E D

For Head Cleaning, it is recommended to alternate the nozzle check pattern and cleaning to minimize ink consumption.

Waste ink source: *1: Counts amount of ink ejected from the pump. *2: Counts amount of ink wiped off from the nozzle surface by wiping operation and transported to the Ink System. *3: Counts amount of ink printed on the Front Paper Guide Absorber by border less printing.

6.1.2.2 Maintenance Request

Ink is used for printing, cleaning and flushing.Inks remained after printing on a paper is collected and absorbed into the three Waste Ink Pads via the following routes. A: The ink used for cleaning and flushing is absorbed into the Absorber in the Ink Cartridge via the Cap. B: The ink dripping on the Wiper during wiping operation is absorbed into the Absorber in the Ink System. C: The ink printed off-paper by border less printing is absorbed into the Waste Ink Pads of the main unit via the Front Paper Guide Absorber. For above A to C, their waste ink amounts are counted in the EEPROM. When the limit is reached, the Counter A displays an Ink Cartridge replacement request, and the Counter B or C displays Maintenance Request. The Duct Joint Supply Assy. is durably deteriorated since it operates in synchronization with the Carriage. To secure durability, the number of passes is counted in the EEPROM (D). When the limit is reached, Maintenance Request is displayed.

Timing for Replacing the Regular Replacement Parts When the Maintenance Counter B/C/D reach the limits shown in the above table, it causes a Maintenance Request error and disables all button operations except for the Power button. The Maintenance Counter values can be checked using the adjustment program. Always check the B, C, D counters whenever you repair the printer. If any one of the counter values is close to its limit or if the counter values cannot be read from the EEPROM due to Main Board failure, replace the Ink System, Waste Ink Pads and Duct Joint Supply Assy. with new ones. This prevents the customer from sending back his/her printer for service in the near future due to a Maintenance Request error. Replacement Procedure Ink System Refer to 4.2.4.12 "Ink System" (p.99). Duct Joint Supply Assy Refer to 4.2.4.1 "Duct Joint Supply Assy /CR Cable Assy" (p.83). Waste Ink Pads Refer to 4.2.4.15 "Tray Assy/Waste Ink Pad" (p.104). After the Replacement Reset the Maintenance Counters B, C, D. Refer to Chapter5 "ADJUSTMENT" (p.113).
