Formulation of Chewy Gummy Dosage Form from Guajava Leaf (Psidium guajava L) Extract with Variation Concentration of Gelatin

As Binding Agent

Abstract Guava leaves (Psidium guajava L) is a traditional medicine used for the treatment of diarrhea. Chewy or chewable tablet is most acceptability preparations for children. This research aims to create a chewy gummy formulation of guava leaf extract by using the molding method. Dosage form preparation were made by molding method with variate concentration of 30%, 35%, 40%, 45%, 50% gelatin as a binder respectively. Extracts prepared by maceration method, then by evaporation to obtained thick extract. The physical test of guava leaf extract include organoleptic test, moisture content, and viscosity test. The physical test of chewy gummy include organoleptic test, weight uniformity test and hedonict test include color, shape, odor, flavor, and, elasticity test. Based on the results of physical test was known that the formula 2 which contains 35% gelatin is the best formula compared with the other formula, with coefficients of variation for weight uniformity test is 1,76%. To response color test, formula 1 most preferred by respondents with a total score of 18. To the hedonic test for flavor, elasticity and shape, formula 3 with gelatin content of 40% has the look and taste the best, so that most preferred by respondents. The optimal test was the formulas 3. Keywords: Psidium guajava L (Guajava leaf), tannin, gelatin, chewy gummy.
