CLASSIFICATION Cephalosporin antibiotic, second generation

DOSAGE AND ROUTE

MECHANISM OF ACTION Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic, which exerts antibacterial activity by inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis in susceptible species. Cefuroxime has good stability to several bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes and, consequently, is active against many penicillin-resistant and amoxicillinresistant strains of susceptible species.

ADVERSE EFFECTS nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, mild diarrhea, gas, upset stomach; cough, stuffy nose; stiff or tight muscles, muscle pain; joint pain or swelling; headache, drowsiness; feeling restless, irritable, or hyperactive; white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips; unusual or unpleasant taste in your mouth; diaper rash in an infant taking liquid cefuroxime; mild itching or skin rash; or vaginal itching or discharge.

patients with a history of allergic reactions to cephalosporins y use with caution in patients with a history of allergic reactions to penicillins y produces a false positive urine glucose with clinitest; use Clinistix or Tes-tape if urinary glucose is being monitored
