Project #2 - Technology as Inspiration

Explore a use of technology for digital composition that you find meaningful and inspirational. Inspiration is at the heart of human productivity; our goals develop out of sources that inspire us to act. This project asks you to research a use of technology for digital composition (UTDC) that you personally find inspiring and write a 1500-2000 word wiki page reflecting on the purpose of the UTDC, what it accomplishes, why you find it inspiring, and why others should find it inspiring as well. Note: By saying that our goals develop out of sources that inspire us to act, I do not mean to imply that your UTDC should be something that you specifically want to do or is necessarily related to your career path, merely that it should be something meaningful to you that might inspire your own future explorations in the use of technology and digital composition.

Due Dates
Different parts of the assignment will come due at different times. Review the class schedule for planned due dates and the class blog for any changes.

Required Technologies
PbWorks DropBox GoToMeeting Convore ELI

Audience
Your project will be part of a class wiki that will be published on the Internet through PbWorks. We will discuss as a class the audience for which we want to create our Inspirational Technology wiki.

Research
For this project you will need to carefully research the UTDC that you find inspiring. Your UTDC can be something that youve experienced in your own community or something that is part of the global community. If your UTDC comes from your own community, your research may include interviewing the people involved, reading articles, researching the topic on the Internet, etc. If your UTDC comes from the global community, your best source for research will be the Internet. You need to obtain research from at least five different sources - one article or YouTube video is not going to cut it. Find out:

How your UTDC came to be. Who developed it? Why it was developed? Who it was for? What sort of impact has it had and on who? Essentially everything you can find to write a compelling description or argument to convince your audience that your UTDC should inspire them as it has you.

You will also need to document your experiences with your UTDC: How did you learn about it? Why does it inspire you (be specific)? Etc.

Any external sources you use must be properly cited using MLA formatting. You must also give credit for images or videos that you use following the appropriate creative commons license requirements. Hint: If nothing immediately comes to mind, I always find the TED Talks at www.ted.com to be an excellent starting place for this type of work. If you choose your UTDC from a TED Talk, remember that you will still need to further research the topic discussed in the TED Talk and locate four other sources of information for your project.

Process
Review the class schedule for specific dates related to these activities. Also review the class blog on a regular basis for any adjustments to the schedule. 1. Discussion. Class discussion through Convore where we will look at my UTDC as an example and answer any questions about the project. We will also determine our audience and collective goals in reaching that audience. Choose a UTDC. As soon as you make your decision, you will need to send me an email and tweet it with the hashtag #CR270. While this is a mostly individual project, the end result will be a collaborative wiki. Therefore, no two people can have the same UTDC. UTDC selection will be treated on a first-come, first-serve basis as determined by my email. Be sure to check twitter to make sure that your UTDC is not the same as someone who has already posted. Research. Find your five sources and compile your research. Rough Draft. Submit your rough draft through ELI for our peer review. Your rough draft must be at least 75% complete to receive credit. Discussion. We will have another class discussion through Convore to decide what type of feedback would be most helpful from the peer review. ELI Review. I will set up a peer review based on our class discussion in ELI and assign review groups. You will be required to provide meaningful feedback for the members of your group. Discussion. We will have a GoToMeeting where we will discuss the ELI Review, highlight areas of excellence, and go over areas that need improvement as you move forward with the project. Revision Strategy. Use your group members responses to your writing as well as the class discussion in GoToMeeting to develop a Revision Strategy in ELI. Final Draft. Your final draft for the project will be submitted to the class wiki. Project Analysis. This will be submitted directly to me through DropBox. You must use the file name [Your Initials]Project2Analysis. The file extensions .doc, .docx, and .pdf are acceptable. For example, if I were turning this in, my file name would look like CERProject2Analysis.doc, CERProject2Analysis.docx, or CERProject2Analysis.pdf
