This paper is an attempt to relate the chronological
history of the Eleanor Squire Memorial Library of the Garden
Center of Greater Cleveland from its founding in 1950 to the
present, 1955. In order to make clear its relationship with
the Garden Center, a brief history and framework of that
organization is also given. It is hoped that this paper will
be of interest as a description of a special library ina
relatively new type of organization.
The sources which contained information about the
Garden Center and its library were of four types: (1) news
paper and magazine clippings, (2) the mimeographed Garden
Genter Announcement, (3) minutes of the Library Committee
Meetings, and (4) the printed Garden Center gf Greater Cleve~
Land Bulletin, This materiel is all availeble at the Garden
Genter, I was able to find no other sources.
The writing style is necessarily brief. Any further
expansion of the material would result in a paper too long
for a study of this type.
The material is presented in chronological order to
produce a historical study, The discussion of present services
and future plans is the concluding statement.iv
The staff of the Garden Center was most helpful and
cooperative in the gathering of material for this paper. I
should like to thank especially liiss Viole Briner and lr.
Arnold M, Davis for their assistance and encouragement. I
should also like to extend my gratitude to iiss Helen il, Fooke
for her technical assistance in the writing of this paper.
