Statement of Objective: What should students know and do as a result of the lesson?
Warm-Up: How will you engage students in learning? How will you connect the lesson to their prior knowledge?
20 min
HEART OF THE LESSON
Engage ment
The student will demonstrate the ability to Solve quadratic equations with real coefficients that have complex solutions using completing the square and Al-Khwarizmi methods.
Teacher Monitored Activities: How will you aid students in constructing meaning of new concepts? How will you introduce/model new skills or procedures?
Short review of warm-up, then, they will view 2 short united streaming video clips that introduce Al-Khwarizmi and his method for solving quadratic equations.

Introductory Activity
Students will be introduced to the lesson vocabulary via a Magic Square matching activity (see Appendix) Teacher will ensure that all understand the process needed to complete a Magic Square activity. Activity will be reviewed as a class later in the lesson.
30 min
In groups, present students with a predetermined amount of Algebra tiles that can be formed to present a complete square. Students are to work in small groups to form the tiles into the square using ALL tiles given. Then, they are to write an equation that they believe represents their result. A representative from each group will share with the class the process that they used to form the tiles into a complete square. He/she will let the class know what quadratic was formed and tell how they arrived at
this conclusion.

Closure Activities: Through this teacher-guided activity, how will you assist students in reflecting upon what they learned today and preparing for tomorrows lesson? What homework will be assigned to help students practice, prepare, or elaborate on a concept or skill taught?
10 min
Closure
Students will individually consider the lesson thus far and construct 2 or 3 questions that they may already have concerning solving quadratic equations using the complete the square method. They will enter these questions (or comments, if applicable) in their journals.

Guided Practice
Using the individual group results along with examples on p. 542, the teacher will demonstrate the procedures for solving a quadratic equation using the completing the square method. Then, students will work independently on problems 1 25 (odd only) and 35 from p.544 in the text while the teacher moves around the class room to offer assistance where needed.

Elaborati on
At this point, students can return to their small groups to use the Algebra tiles to create some quadratic equations that will be shared with other groups to allow practice of the concepts acquired during this lesson.

Ongoing Assessment: How will you monitor student progress throughout the lesson?
Teacher will move among students and student groups to answer questions and observe student progress during group and independent practice.
Assessment Culminating Assessment: How will you ensure that all students have mastered the identified learning indicators? How will you assess their learning?
CLOSING
Tim e
Students will use the problems designed by their peers as a quiz and solve the quadratic equations using the completing the square method.

Closure
Students will be directed to write a paragraph, in their journals, that states at least 3 main points gained from this lesson. Also, they will comment on whether or not their preconstructed questions about quadratic equations have been answered.
