Short review of warm-up, then, they will view 2 short united streaming video clips that introduce Al-Khwarizmi and his method for solving quadratic equations.

Introductory Activity

Students will be introduced to the lesson vocabulary via a Magic Square matching activity (see Appendix) Teacher will ensure that all understand the process needed to complete a Magic Square activity. Activity will be reviewed as a class later in the lesson.

Further Explorat ion

In groups, present students with a predetermined amount of Algebra tiles that can be formed to present a complete square. Students are to work in small groups to form the tiles into the square using ALL tiles given. Then, they are to write an equation that they believe represents their result. A representative from each group will share with the class the process that they used to form the tiles into a complete square. He/she will let the class know what quadratic was formed and tell how they arrived at

this conclusion.

Then, students will work independently on problems 1 25 (odd only) and 35 from p.544 in the text while the teacher moves around the class room to offer assistance where needed.
