What is a Sanitary Napkin? Wikipedia defines Sanitary Napkin, sanitary towel, sanitary pad, menstrual pad, maxi pad, or pad as an absorbent or porous disposable item worn by a woman while she is menstruating, recovering from vaginal surgery, for lochia (post birth bleeding), abortion, or any other situation where it is necessary to absorb a flow of blood from a woman's vagina.

History of Sanitary Napkin The use of Sanitary Napkin can be clearly understood if history is traced. Womens desire to protect themselves from menstrual flow made them use earlier forms of sanitary napkins. The Museum of Menstruation, which can be found at Washington DC, have the earliest forms menstrual protection such as grass, rabbit skin, wood shavings, menstrual aprons, rags, sponges, sanitary belts, and home made knitted pads secured with safety pins. During those times, women were becoming more and more concerned on their gynecological hygiene which led to the invention of disposable sanitary napkins. There are numerous sources telling what the first disposable sanitary napkin was. In The History of the Sanitary Napkin, Giles Slade , Ph. D. said that Germany had Disposable Sanitary Napkins as early as 1880s. The said napkins were not made available to American women because of the Comstock Law A law passed in the United States in 1873, that campaigns for

legislating public morality. Ideas, materials, and products that somehow promote sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, and birth control to name a few, were banned during that time.

Another claim by The Museum of Menstruation and Womens Health that Hartmannns pad was the first disposable pad and was made in Germany. Surprisingly, even at the existence of Comstock Law in the United States, the same pads were also advertised in one of the catalogs by Harrods at London in 1895. It was called Hartmanns Hygienic Towelettes for Ladies, making Hartmann to be considered as the first multinational pad maker. The said pads were believed to be made of Rayon or Viscose, a synthetic material made of ether and acetone, more popularly known at that time as Artificial Silk.

In the United States, the first commercially produced disposable sanitary napkin was the Listers Towels created by Johnson and Johnson in 1896. The Listers Towels were made of cotton covered with gauze.

In 1920, Lewis Manufacturing Co. produced Curads as a competing brand for Listers Towels. The said napkin is also made of cotton covered with gauze.

In the same year, Kimberly Clark a producer of bandages made from wood pulp or Cellu cotton, introduced the brand Kotex. The name Kotex was derived from COTten like TEXture and became a widely sold disposable pad for menstruation. Before the existence of the

brand, these bandages were used to cover wounds of American soldiers during World War I. Later on, women to be specific, nurses used the said bandage for menstrual flow because it was more absorbent than gauze covered cotton, and it was disposable because of its cheapness.

The researchers focused on the four leading brands of sanitary napkins here in the Philippines Kotex, Whisper, Modess, Charmee.

What is Kotex?

Here in the Philippines, Kotex is a brand of feminine hygiene products which includes Maxi pads, Ultrathin pads, Luxe, Overnight pads, and panty Liners. Kotex is owned by Kimberly Clark Philippines Inc. located at San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines.

What are the Kotex Sanitary Napkins?

Kotex sanitary napkins have 4 existing variants namely: Kotex Maxi Plus, Kotex Ultrathin Pads, Kotex Overnight Pads, and Kotex Luxe*. For the Kotex Maxi Pads and Kotex Ultrathin Pads, these can be to Wing and Non Wing. To help us learn more about each variant, a description of each will be presented later.

Wing vs. Non Wing Kotex Napkins with wings are made with flaps at both sides at the middle of the pad. The wings secure and lock the napkin in place. The wings also extend the napkin to its maximum stretching point so that the napkin will have more space for absorption. A non wing napkin basically doesnt have these flaps.

What makes a Kotex pad? Our pads are made mostly of wood cellulose fibers the same raw materials paper is made from. (We fluff these fibers to make the material absorbent and soft.) The outer cover and the moisture-proof shields are made with a moisture-proof plastic such as polypropylene or polyethylene, to help minimize leakage. kotex.com.ph

I tested the pad; it can absorb a maximum 120 ml of fluid. Maybe adding a little more would make the other side of the pad wet. I cut the pad at the middle again and the cotton like fibrous are intact and absorbed much of the fluid but not all fluid because as I cut the pad, some fluid started dripping out from the pad.

Kotex Maxi Plus Dri Comfort This pad is just the same with soft & smooth. What makes this different is the Dry Net Cover of the pad unlike the previous one which has soft cottony cover.

It measures 23 x 9 centimeters but its middle width measures 7 centimeters. Its available in Wing or Non Wing. It has no scent. It has a shiny texture. It has tiny geometrical patterns on it as well.

I conducted the same experiment for this pad. The pad can also absorb up to 120 ml of fluid. The inside of the pad is also fibrous but it is more intact compare to Maxi Soft & Smooth. After the Experiment

Kotex Ultra Thin Its a compact pad. Slim and can absorb just like a maxi pad but with less bulk. Kotex Ultra Thin just like a Maxi Pad, has two kinds: Soft and Smooth and Dri Comfort, available in Wing only. Ultra Thin Soft and Smooth It measures 23 x 9 cm and the middle of it measures 7 centimeters. It is only 1.5 2 mm thick compared to maxi pad which is 3 4 mm. It has no scent. It has dots all over and floral embeds as design. It has a smooth and cottony texture. Cutting it across the middle of the pad, youll see cotton like fibers yet more compressed than the maxi pad and somehow looks like a whole pad instead of loose cotton like material. What is very noticeable for this variant are the anti leak channels. This variant has a whole anti leak channel unlike the maxi pad that has broken anti leak channels. Napkin Parts

The same liquid test was conducted for this variant. It turned out that the Ultra Thin Pad Soft and Smooth is not that absorbent compared to the maxi pad. After pouring 60ml of fluid on it, the pad cant support the weight anymore. The fluid started dripping out from the pad and the bottom side became wet.

Ultra Thin Dri Comfort It measures 23 x 9 cm and its middle width measure 7cm. It is only 1.5 2 mm thick compared to maxi pad which is 3 4 mm. It has no scent. It has diamond dots all over. It has a shiny and net texture. This variant also has a whole anti leak channel. The inside of the pad is pretty much the same with Ultra Thin Soft and Smooth.

I conducted the same liquid test for this variant. Thos Ultra Thin Dri Comfort pad is a little bit more absorbent than the Ultra Thin Soft and smooth. The shiny net cover of the pad somehow prevented the fluid from leaking. It can only hold fluid at a maximum of 60ml.

Kotex Overnight This pad is longer among any Kotex pads. It is 28 x 9 cm at one side and 10cmm at the other side. It looks like a foot because of its shape. The anti leak channels are different from the other pads. It is a lot deeper and has a different pattern. The Blue Safety Zone is not at the middle but at the lower side where the width is 7 cm. It has no scent. The blue zone has dots on it. It has a soft cottony texture just like a Kotex pad that is Soft and Smooth. Its always available with Wings. Its available in packs of 5. Perfect for nights or even heavy flow days, Kotex Overnight pads are a reassuring 28cm long with contoured back channels and a blue safety zone.

Of course, this product cannot pass without undergoing my fluid test. I was surprised to find out that this pad can absorb as much as 150ml of fluid.

When I cut it open, the cotton like material inside are intact. It looked like a pile of flattened wet tissues.

Kotex Luxe Ultra Thin This pad is the newest among the variants. It comes with a black box. This pad has a combination of cottony texture and dry net. The outer lining has a diamond pattern with cotton plant prints. The middle has a 4 cm vertical strip of dotted dry net and the rest is cottony in texture. It still has the Quick Absorb Blue Layer at its center. Compared to other winged pads, this pad has longer wings. It has no scent. Its available in packs of 5 and always with wings. Inside of the Napkin The Blue Absorbent Layers is thicker and the cotton like material inside looks like a pile of pressed tissues.

This pad cannot escape my fluid test and to my surprise, this pad is really a revolutionized pad. It can hold as much as 80ml of fluid a lot tougher than the regular Ultra thin pad.

On this picture you can see the diamond patterns on the wings and the cotton plant pattern. You can also from this picture the dots that form he Fusion Technology. The anti leak channels are a bit deeper on this picture.

TESTING CHARMEE When I dip a Charmee Heavy Flow pad into the water, it does not sag rather it maintains its form. It also doesnt easily break even if you stretch it really hard. I also dip the pad to the water and when I touch it, the texture is very soft. I also stretch the wings of the pad and it doesnt tear easily. To test the effectiveness of the pad, I also dropped a soy sauce into the pad and it easily penetrated. The soy sauce stayed there and had less odor.
