Verbs are words that express action or a state of being in a sentence. Action verbs express physical and mental actions.

A transitive verb is an action verb that may take a direct object or an indirect object.

Some sentences would not make sense unless the verb had a direct object to receive the action.

An indirect object names a person or thing to whom or for whom an action is performed.

Indirect objects are only used with transitive verbs. For example:
Betsy sent Grandma a card. Who did the action? Betsy What action did Betsy do? Sent. Sent is the verb. What did Betsy send? A card. Card is the direct object. To whom was the card sent? Grandma. Grandma is the indirect object
Indirect Objects
Two patterns: 1. The indirect object occurs after the direct object and is preceded by a preposition. For example:
I gave a book to John. (him) I bought a book for John. (him)

2. The indirect object occurs between a verb and its direct object. For example:
I gave John a book. (him) I bought John a book. (him)
