"HOW TO STUDY DIVISIONAL CHARTS IN ASTROLOGY" Astrologers of maturity have quite often said that a shastri is one who

can effi ciently use the shodashvarga as given by Mahirishi Parashara. It is further said that a person who uses the birth chart and Navamsha for predictions, is an ardh shastri. Readers using only the birth chart may at some point of time miss the f iner picture. It has been a habit among recent astrologers to completely ignore the divisional charts while giving predictions. The following reasons can be cited for this pr actice: a. The time of birth required should be correct for the effective use of such di visional charts. (This is generally difficult to come by, nowadays). b. The calculation and interpretation of such charts require much skill and only a genuine astrologer can justify it. c. This slows the speed of analysis and predicting as lots of data has to be fil tered before an astrologer can reach a conclusion. Normally, this does not suit stereotype predictions. Also, those who come for consultations normally have no patience for a detailed analysis. The secret of reading any divisional chart is to read it as an independent chart and examine the Avashtha of the various Karakas therein. In the absence of the exact time of birth in some exceptional cases, divisional chart can be examined from the birth lagna itself (rashi tulaya). The applicability of the divisional charts is given below: 1.Birth Chart: This chart is of considerable importance since this is where the analysis of a h oroscope starts. All other divisional charts have to show effects subject to the overall promise of the birth chart. In short all divisional charts are suppleme ntary to the birth chart. Even analysis of the birth chart is enough for giving predictions. However, it is always advisable to consult other divisional charts to verify the replication of a promise. 2.Hora: Generally seen for ascertaining the quantum of wealth and the way the person is going to make his earning. Male planets in the Sun's Hora are seen as beneficial while female planets are effective in the Moon's Hora. If maximum planets are i n the Sun's Hora it is said that the native earns money as a result of hard work but the quantum of wealth may be very good. If Moons Hora predominates, the ear ning will be relatively easy. However, this is subject to the Dhan yoga formed i n the horoscope. 3.Dreshkona: Generally seen for knowing the happiness and promise from siblings of the native . However, it becomes very important for longevity analysis. As it is normally s aid that the lord of the 22nd Dreshkona is not good for the general health and l ongevity of the native. Apart from this, the planets falling in Sarpa Dreshkona and Phasha Dreshkona is not considered good for the native. 4.Chaturthamsha: Generally seen for ascertaining the overall happiness of the native, mainly with regard to the possibility of having immovable assets, particularly property. Th is chart can also be seen for the possibility of foreign immigration or change o f residence. Marriage of a girl child (as it normally makes the girl change her house) can also be read from this horoscope. 5.Saptamsha: This is to be seen for confirming conception of children and the pleasures deriv ed from having children. The Karaka and the avashtha of the fifth lord of the bi rth chart and the placement and influences on the fifth house and the fifth lord of the said divisional chart have to be observed. 6.Navamsha: This is the most important horoscope. This is used to see the actual strength of a planet. An exalted planet in the birth chart (if it debilitates in the Navams ha) may not give very good results or its effects can get diluted. However, a pl anet getting empowered in Navamsha by getting vargottama or by getting exalted w ill give good results. Apart from this, Navamsha is a horoscope that is used to

find out about the spouse of the native. Some secrets of predictive astrology ar e hidden in the use of this divisional chart. Normally, no prediction should be made without confirming it from the Navamsha. The lord of 64th Navamsha from the Moon becomes highly important for the calculation of Longevity and the Maraka d asa. 7.Dashamsha: This chart is seen generally to get a clear picture of the profession of the nat ive. The placement and avashtha of the tenth lord of the birth chart is importan t here. Apart from that the rashi rising in the 10th house of this divisional ch art and the influence on the 10th house has also to be considered, to judge the profession and any professional growth or fall of the native. Like any other div isional chart this one has to be collaborated with the basic chart. 8.Dwadashamsha: This chart is generally seen for understanding the benefits arising out of paren ts. Respective longevity of both the parents can be understood from this chart. This chart is also said to reveal the Purva Janma Punya of the native. Here, (as in all divisional charts) the Avashtha of the natural Karaka has to be seen. He re, the Sun represents the father and the Moon represents the mother. Here, the influence on the ninth and the tenth house has to be understood. The Lord of the 88th Dwadashamsha is important in longevity analysis. This chart also is said t o reveal whether a person inherits a disease from his parents. 9.Shodhasamsa: This is to see the promise of conveyances for the native and also accidents thro ugh conveyances. For this the Karaka for conveyance, Venus, has to be seen. Affl iction to the 4th Lord and the 4th house has to be seen along with the afflictio n of Venus. This can lead to violent accidents if otherwise also promised in the Birth Chart. 10.Vimshamsa: This chart is seen for understanding the spiritual progress of the native. This chart is also said to give a clue with regard to the upasana of the native and t he preferred deity of the native. The planet placed in the 5th and the 9th house s are important here. The overall exaltation or debilitation of planets holds a clue to understanding the overall growth of the native spiritually. 11.Chaturvimshamsa: This chart is said to give a finer picture with regard to the education of the i ndividual. The house to be considered is the 5th house. Further, influences on t he fifth house have to be seen along with the avashtha of the 5th Lord of the bi rth chart. The connection of 5th lord with the 6th, 8th and the 12th lord is sup posed to bring disturbances and educational change for the native. If however, s uch planets are under benefic influence the change in education will be for the betterment of the native. Example of this can be that a person does Engineering and then does Management. This constitutes a change technically in astrological term but benefic association makes the change good for the general prosperity of the native. 12.Saptavimshamsha: This chart is seen to understand the general strengths and weaknesses of the nat ive. It can sometimes be used to find the stamina, endurance and physical streng th of an individual. 13.Trimshamsha: This chart is generally seen to ascertain the miseries, difficulties and disease s for a particular native. This chart in women horoscopy is also said to show th e character of the native. It is said that in case of women if Trimshamsha of Ma rs is rising she is of questionable character. However, this chart can also be r ead to verify the character in case of a male native. 14.Khavedamsha: This is generally seen for studying the auspicious and inauspicious effects of h oroscope on the native. But, it has to be noted that in prediction this chart ca nnot be used much as even few seconds of time difference can change the lagna. T his should be used only on thoroughly rectified horoscopes. 15.Akshvedamsha:

This is seen for ascertaining the character of the native and for general auspic ious and inauspicious effect. Here, as in above case this chart becomes too time -sensitive, making it difficult to take it into account while giving prediction. 16.Shastiamsha: Maharishi Parashara has given lots of importance to this chart. This should be s een for every prediction. This chart makes the reading interesting and makes the analysis accurate. However, again the limitation of this is that it can be used on an astrologically rectified chart. "HOW TO STUDY DIVISIONAL CHARTS IN ASTROLOGY" Although ancient astrological texts mention how to work out the divisional chart s and importance of their study, nowhere is an integrated approach for study of the divisional charts available. Solitary principles (sutras) indicating that if a particular planet is in a particular sign in a particular divisional chart th en the results would be so and so, find place in the text and commentaries of an cient astrological writers. These texts and commentaries are suffering from both omissions and interpolations because of the absence of recording facilities in ancient times. Therefore, we have to be careful in adopting only such classical principles, which have stood the test of time. These classical principles have t o be read in conjunction with one another and not in isolation. 1. First of all, the birth-data should be correct for study of any divisional ch art. In D-charts we take into account the analysis of position changing with a d ifference of even one minute in the time of birth. 2. As there is every possibility of some amount of error in recording the time o f birth even in cases where utmost care has been taken to record the correct tim e of birth, it is imperative that divisional analysis is taken up only up to (DXII). For divisional analysis beyond (D-XII) only the position of lord of the co rresponding houses and the natural significator planets should be considered in the concerned D charts. The ascendant as well as its lord in the divisional char ts beyond D-XII could prove to be unreliable. 3. The longitudes of ascendant and planets should be correctly worked out along with divisional charts. 4. The study of the divisional charts should be taken up along with the main cha rt. The divisional charts are used for trying the strength of the planets. In th e divisional charts the strength of the following is studied: (i) the lord of the house of a particular significations in D-I; (ii) the significator of the particular aspect of life; and (iii) the lord of the ascendant of the concerned divisional chart if it contains an MT sign is examined. 5. A planet that is weak on account of debilitation or for that matter on any ot her account in D-I until and unless strengthened, during the course of its sub-p eriods, would hardly be of any help to the significations of its concerned divis ional charts. In this connection the readers may please refer to Chapter 4 on 'A nalyzing Debilitated Planets' for detailed study. 6. A natal planet that is weak due to combustion lacks power to protect or promo te the houses and significations ruled by it. In this connection, the readers ma y please refer to Chapter 5 on 'Analyzing Combust Planets' for detailed study. 7. Whenever the slow moving malefics in transit come in degree conjunction with the natal position of planets or the most effective point of ascendant and other houses in D-I they cause prolonged stress signified by the houses involved or t he planets. 8. Occupation of the ascendant of divisional chart by the nodes or the eighth lo rd of the D-chart in case a moolatrikona sign is rising in the D-chart ascendant creates stress for the significations of the D-chart. The good placement in D-c hart of the lord of the relevant house of D-I and significator helps in promotin g the significations of the D-chart. The bad placement of the lord(s) of the rel evant house(s) of D-I and significator of the particular aspect of life in D-cha rt causees stress regarding the significations of the D-chart.

9. The strength of planets in rasi chart should be given due consideration. 10. The planets influencing the ascendant, angles and trines of D-charts and wit h the significator by conjunction/aspect touch the significations of the concern ed divisional charts in their sub-periods. 11 Occupation of angles/trines by nodes in D-charts do not bless the native with good results in the relevant fields. 12. Any planet which is exalted in Rasi chart and debilitated in the D-chart wil l give ordinary results. 13. For timing specific events, the strength of the lord of the sub-period is ex amined in the birth chart, D-chart, and transit. The relationship of the sub-per iod lord with the main period lord and its strength in D-chart is of paramount i mportance. 14. When both the lords of the main period and sub-period are functional malefic s, they denote destruction and loss in contrast to the benefics, which do no har m and promote their significations. 15. The functional malefic lord of a house if closely related with another funct ional malefic planet and is placed in inauspicious houses, produces tension in i ts own sub-period and sub-periods of other malefics in its own main-period. 16. The transit influences are considered only in D-I. 17. The planetary aspects are considered in the D-charts. 18. Those planets, which are placed in the malefic houses in a D chart, also tur n weak but this weakness is milder than the weakness of planets placed in the ma lefic houses of D-I. This weakness is considered only for the significations of the relevant D-chart only. 19. If a planet is a functional benefic in D-I but turns out to be a functional malefic for the D Chart, its malefic impact would be limited to the respective D Chart only. The influence would be applicable only in a milder way in case it i s influencing the ascendant or the fourth house of the D Chart. CONTROVERSY There has been a controversy whether the varga charts should be read independent ly or as a supplement to the main chart. Some opine that the divisional charts c ould only supplement what was shown in the basic chart and that the intensity of benefic and malefic results pertaining to any particular D-chart depends upon t he strength or weakness of the planets in D-I. However, some others advocate tha t the divisional charts should be read independently. The study of various charts together with their divisional charts shows that div isional charts have to be read only as a supplement to the birth charts. The ras i charts and the divisional charts are inter-related and have to be read in conj unction with each other. The apparent strength acquired by the planets by being in own mooltrikona sign or by being in exaltation in the birth chart may produce ordinary or negative result if these occupy the debilitated sign in divisional charts or are afflicted in the divisional charts. As against this, the weakness of planets due to debilitation, combustion, etc., in the zodiac at any given tim e cannot be made good even if they occupy exalted amsa in any particular divisio nal chart. This is as per the views of the propounder of Astrology, Maharishi Pa rashara. We can safely infer that the natal weakness of planets cannot be made u p even by joining benefic houses in divisional charts, or by not being debilitat ed there, or by obtaining maximum benefic points in Ashtakavarga. As our stress is to make the study of astrology scientific, we have to test each and every dictum provided to us by classical works in our laboratory, I mean, s ufficient number of charts are to be analysed for empirical studies. The weaknes s of planets arising due to the sources of weakness mentioned in chapter 2, unti l and unless strengthened, is permanent. If the combust planet becomes the lord of the ascendant of the divisional chart, the significations of the division con cerned suffer further.

For timing the events, the sub-period of a strong planet or a strengthened plane t, which is auspiciously placed in the divisional chart, with reference to the a scendant of the divisional chart, should be selected. The weakness or affliction should be guarded by using astrological remedial measures. In D-charts, the clo se conjunction/aspect of the D-chart functional benefics with the ascendant, rel evant significators and trines regarding the ascendant boost the significations of the divisional charts. The D-chart functional malefics in such a state damage the significations, in their sub-periods. Needless to emphasize the importance and necessity of studying the divisional ch arts as it helps us in accurately analysing the horoscope to meet the requiremen ts of complexities in modern life. For progress, each and every step in life has to be planned ahead from the very beginning. The questions astrologers have to face are specific in nature for the specified time, which can only be answered a fter due consideration of the divisional charts. Quite often we come across horo scopes where rasi charts promise a good future in some particular sector, yet th e results may be totally different. I am citing also a few charts which show tha t the study of rasi chart and divisional charts is inter-dependent. Sometimes, t he natives suffered because of weak combinations in the birth chart, itself, of sometime due to planetary strengths and afflictions emerging in the D-charts. In Chaturthamsa, the 4th lord Saturn (R) is exalted but in the 12th house, and Mars, Lagna and 6th lord, is in the 4th along with 2nd and 5th lord Jupiter as well as 8th and 11th lord Mercury. See Mars though Lagna lord is dispositor of Ketu on one hand and 10th lord, the Sun, on the other. The 4th lord Saturn ha s given him a good house at New Delhi far off from his birth-place Rangoon. One should not forget Mars and Jupiter both are involved in Graha Yuddha and this happens in both Rasi and Chaturthamsa charts in the 4th house. Significati ons of the house suffer in which Graha Yuddha takes place along with Karakatwa of the concerned planets. He lost his ancestral property in Rahu-Saturn period due to partition of the country. Graha Nasa Yoga (191) is also present from Chandra Lagna. It requires that

lord of the 4th should be in the 12th aspected by malefics. See the 4th lord Ju piter is in 12th with Rahu-Ketu axis and that too with malefic Mars, 3rd and 8th lord. For another Graha Nasa Yoga (192) of Three Hundred Important Combinations, one may refer to the horoscope of Tipu Sultan given in Notable Horoscopes. If t he lord of the Navmsa occupied by the lord of the 4th is disposed in the 12th, t he person will lose all the house property. In his case (Chart 8) it proved to b e a loss of not only of his house or palace or fort but also loss of Rajya as we ll as life in Saturn-Jupiter. The 4th lord, Jupiter, is in Gemini Navamsa and it s lord is in the 12th is Rasi afflicted by Saturn and Rahu. In Jupiter-Saturn he lost both his life and kingdom. Satyacharya prescribes that from Dasa lord plan etary relationship should be seen to ascertain the nature of results. From Jupit er, Saturn being placed in the 7th is Maraka. Maraka theory applies in respect o f significations of every house and every planet, it so appears. It may be teste d by learned astrologers. In Tipu Sultan s case the 4th lord Jupiter is in the 6th with Ketu in inimic al Rasi and aspected by 2nd and 3rd lord Saturn, 7th and 10th lord Mercury, 9th lord Sun with Rahu. Mars in the 3rd is in satru (inimical) Rasi, Aquarius. In Na vamsa, Jupiter is aspected by the Sun and Mercury as well as by Mars. In Chaturt hamsa, considered independently, see the 4th lord Jupiter is in the 3rd aspected by the 3rd lord Mars, Sun and in Rahu-Ketu axis. Not only that it is aspected b y Lagna -10th lord Mercury, Mars is in the 12th along with 5th and 6th lord Satu rn. Saturn, no doubt, is the 5th lord but in Leo, a satru Rasi along with anothe r malefic lord of the 3rd and 8th. If one takes the 4th house in Chaturthamsa, h e was running the Dasa of Jupiter who is lord of the 4th and the 7th. It should be seen that Jupiter was in Rahu-Ketu axis in the 12th from the 4th house aspect ed by Mars. Mars was also placed in the 12th in Chaturthamsa and was afflicted b y Saturn. Applying the rule of Satyacharya, Saturn, no doubt, was aspecting his own house but could not save his kingdom and fort as Saturn was weak being place d in the 12th from Chaturthamsa in satru Rasi Leo. Note further that dispositor of Saturn and Mars both, the Sun, is also afflicted by Rahu-Ketu axis. Those who Took Loans to Build a House One may refer to Chart 5. He purchased a single storeyed bungalow in RahuKetu-Jupiter in November 1978. It may be seen that Rahu is aspected by Mars the 4th lord. Ketu is with the 4th lord Mars and Jupiter is the dispositor of Rahu a nd placed in the 4th house. He raised some loan at that stage to buy it. It is e xplained by the aspect of the 6th lord Saturn on the 4th in Rasi chart. In Chatu rthamsa the 6th lord Saturn is in the 4th in Scorpio and aspecting Jupiter. Satu rn is aspected by Rahu and Mars, the 4th lord aspects Ketu in the 2nd. In Rahu-V enus it was let out. Apply Dasa on Chaturthamsa according to Satyacharya princip le taking the position of Dasa lord as Lagna. Rahu though in the 8th in Chaturth amsa not only gve him a bungalow but also enabled him to convert the same into a multi-storeyed mansion in Rahu-Sun by raising loans. The Sun is the 6th lord fr om Rahu. Mars as 2nd and 9th lord with the lord of the 6th (house of loans), the Sun is in the 4th house. Synthesis requires we take note of the Sun and Mars bo th in the 11th in Chaturthamsa, and of the Chaturthamsa Lagna which has the 5th and 8th lord Jupiter and the 2nd and 11th lord Mercury aspected by Saturn, lord of the 6th (house of loans) and the 7th house (of Pada) from the 4th. This posit ion enabled him to shift to a government bungalow and that single storeyed build ing also helped him raise a loan. One must not forget the influence of Saturn on the 4th house in Rasi also. It is again the 6th and 7th lord. In this respect, I am tempted to refer to the horoscope (Chart 9) of anoth er friend who has Vichitra Saudha Prakara Yoga (See Yoga 188 in Three Hundred Im portant Combinations of Dr B V Raman) with slight modifications. If the lords of the 4th and the 10th are conjoined together with Saturn an d Mars, the above Yoga is given rise to. Any person having such a Yoga acquires innumerable properties. In his case, the 4th lord Venus is in the 2nd house aspe 4cted by Mars the 10th lord and is with Lagna and 12th lord Saturn, 2nd and 11th lord Jupiter, 5th and 8th lord Mercury. Mars is connected with this group by as

pect. But he is in the process of at least having 2 houses in his own name and a 3rd house in the name of his son. A man of humble beginnings he is a Central Go vernment official. Venus Dasa started on 5th April 1986. Venus is the 4th lord a ccompanied by Lagna lord Saturn. Venus is exalted in the 2nd. Mars is in the 11t h in Sagittarius. In Navamsa, Mars is in Scorpio, its own house, and Venus is in the 11th but debilitated. In Chaturthamsa, the 4th lord Mars no doubt is in the 8th but is aspected by Jupiter and exalted Venus. He sold his share in one of the ancestral properti es in June 1986 in Venus-Venus. See Venus is the 4th lord placed in the 2nd in R asi and Chaturthamsa. Immoveable property was converted to liquid property in th e shape of cash with gain as Venus is placed in the 11th from the 4th. He took a loan in August 1988 for a flat. At that time, he was again running Venus-Venus but it was sub-sub period of Jupiter/Rahu and Jupiter is specting the 6th in Cha turthamsa as well as Lagna. He had to raise loans further in June 1989 in connec tion with reconstruction of an old ancestral house in the sub-sub period of Merc ury. Mercury is in the 2nd in Rasi and the 8th in Chaturthamsa with Mars. Exalt ed Venus in Lagna and Chaturthamsa is bringing money in exlted sums but in Navam sa, Venus is in debilitation. Hence, at the fag end of Venus-Venus he is in deep debt, though these were taken for building a house and a flat. See Mercury. In Lagna it is debilitate, in Navamsa it is in satru Rasi Scorpio with Mars. In Cha turthamsa Venus is exalted but Mercury is in the 8th. See also influence of Mars , Bhoomikaraka on all these planets in Lagna and Chaturthamsa. If one applies Sa tyacharya s rule, then Lagna and Chaturthamsa explain the loans taken in Venus-Ven us in different sub-sub periods. Observations: I have made case study of over 50 cases. This leads me to th e following observations: (a) If the 4th house, 4th lord and Mars are all fortified in Lagna a s well as Chaturthamsa, it gives one a very good house to own and to live in. (b) If one of the 4th house, 4th lord and Mars be in Lagna and 2 of these are fortified in Chaturthamsa, one either owns or lives in a very good hou se. (c) If any of these three is well-placed and fortified, it may give one his own humble house or he lives in a humble house. (d) A connection between the 4th and the 10th houses and their lords gives one a chance to live in an allotted house, on account of his work. If the 7th lord in Lagna in Chaturthamsa is involved, it gives good accommodation to l ive in on account of Pada . (e) Connection between 2nd house and 2nd lord and 6th house or 6th l ord or planets posited therein make a person raise loans but for building a hous e it must have some connection with the 4th lord in Rasi and/or Chaturthamsa. (f) The Maraka theory applies in respect of significations of the 4t h house nay all houses as it applied to Lagna or the Moon-sign and the house is lost or destroyed or sold under compelling circumstances, if Dasa/Antardasa or P ratyantara of maraka planets operate. (g) Satyacharya s rule to treat the sign of Dasa lord as Lagna in Lagn a chart and Chaturthamsa, gives clear results when applied to Chaturthamsa chart independently. The readers must keep one thing in mind. These are observations only. To c onvert them into conclusions, one needs to observe them further and must apply t hem on vast data. At the same time, I believe that these rules may give 70-80% c orrect results. Chart 8: Tipu Sultan: Born on 1-12-1751 at 8.00 a.m. with balance of Venus Dasa at birth: 3 years, 4 months and 24 days.
