SAFETY INFORMATION

GENERAL RADIO CARE

During normal use, this radio will subject you to

radio energy substantially below the level where
any kind of harm is reported.

Avoid physical abuse of the radio such as

carrying it by the antenna.

Wipe the battery contacts with a lint-free cloth

to remove dirt, grease, or other material which
may prevent good electrical connections.

The accessory connector is fitted with a

protective cap which should be left in place
when the connector is not in use.

Clean the radio exterior using a cloth

moistened with water, mild dishwashing liquid
or isopropyl alcohol.

DO NOT hold the radio with the antenna very

close to, or touching, exposed parts of the
body, especially face or eyes, while
transmitting. The radio will
perform best, if the microphone
is 5 to 8 cm away from the lips
and the radio is vertical.

CONTROL FACILITIES

To fit the battery, slide it into the control rails

about 1/2 an inch (2 cm) from the top of the radio
and slide it towards the top until the battery latch
has engaged. Before removing the battery, turn
off the radio. Press the battery latch towards the
front of the radio, slide the battery down about 1/2
an inch (2 cm) and lift it away from the radio.

(Numbers refer to illustrations inside front cover).

Note: The battery must be charged before initial

To fit the belt clip, slide it into the mounting rails
on the back of the radio and press it downwards
until it latches into place. To remove the belt clip,
lift the release tab by inserting a key or coin
between the release tab and the back of the radio.
Press the belt clip upwards until it is completely
disengaged from the radio.

that the self-test has been completed successfully.
The radio is turned off by rotating the volume
control anticlockwise past the click stop.

Do not interrupt another user. Listen for

activity on your channel. If the channel on
which you are transmitting is programmed to
receive PL/DPL, momentarily depress the

channel activity. The channel must be clear
before transmitting.

5 - 8 cms from your mouth, press the PTT (2)
on the side of the radio and speak slowly and
clearly into the grille area. When finished
transmitting, release the PTT to receive.
When the PTT is depressed the red LED (6)
turns on, remains on for the entire length of
the transmission, and turns off when the PTT
is released.
Note: When the PTT is pressed (and as long as it
remains pressed), the battery voltage is
automatically monitored and if the voltage is
low, the red LED (6) flashes to alert you of
the low battery condition. In addition, a
double alert tone is sounded when the PTT
is released.

4.

If you wish to monitor a channel (disable

PL/DPL) press the monitor button. The yellow
LED (6) will illuminate for 4 seconds, to
confirm that the coded squelch is disabled.
Any time the PTT is pressed when the radio is
in the PL/DPL disable mode, the yellow LED
will temporarily illuminate to remind you that
this state is active.The radio will remain in the
carrier squelch mode until the monitor button
is pressed again, to reverse the state.

Note: All GP300 radio models have an internal

squelch setting which is adjusted at the
factory. The squelch level setting is not a
user operated control, however it may be
re-programmed by an authorised Motorola
dealer.

To Receive
1.

Volume Set

Set the channel selector switch (3) to the

desired position.

Pressing one of the side buttons will initiate the

volume set feature, if it has been programmed to
perform this function. The radio has the ability to
monitor the current radio volume level whenever
this button is pressed. 'White Noise' is present for
the duration of the button press to indicate the
current level setting of the volume control.

2.

Listen for a transmission and adjust the

volume control to a comfortable listening
level. If no transmission is heard, press and
hold the control button (4) to unsquelch the
radio and adjust the background noise to a
comfortable listening level.

3.

The radio is now set to receive all calls on the

selected channel.

COMMUNICATION PROCEDURE

KEYPAD VERSION

Press the transmit button (2) while talking, release

while listening. If the warning tone for speech
limitation is heard, the transmission will shortly be
cut off. The radio may be programmed to inhibit
retransmission within a preset time.

The following functions require a radio with a

keypad. (See page 12)

CHANNELS WITH SELECTIVE CALL

FUNCTIONS

Address Selection
Other radios in your system can be called
individually using the keypad. The radio number is
called the address.
Enter the required address as follows:

Outgoing Calls
Prior to transmission always make sure that the
channel is free. If the indicator (6) flashes red the
channel is busy. If in doubt press the monitor
button (4) to listen to the channel. Push the call
button (5) to transmit your call. You will hear the
transmission of the call sequence.

The incoming call signal will sound and the

indicator (6) will start flashing yellow double
flashing for individual calls, single flashing for
group calls.
Call Termination
After your call has been completed the radio will
automatically revert to coded squelch.

Pressing the keypad buttons will cause a high

pitch keypad tone (entry accepted) or a low pitch
alert tone (entry not accepted).
Invalid entry may be caused by the following:
You are on a channel without address
selection.

Incoming Calls

Press k 1 or k 2 (depending on programming) to

initiate the entry.

You have already entered all digits in the

address.
You have entered a digit not accepted on this
position.
If an error tone occurs check the channel and
press k 1 or k 2 to restart the address entry. On

OPERATION WITH STANDARD FEATURES

Turn the radio off before connecting any approved

GP300 audio accessories. The radio loudspeaker
and/ or internal microphone will automatically be
disabled when the radio is turned on.
Fitting the Audio Accessory

Time-out Timer
The Time-out Timer (TOT) feature alerts you if the
transmitter is keyed for a long period. This feature
prevents channel tie-up and excessive battery
drain in case of inadvertent keying of the
transmitter. The radio operates normally in the
receive mode with the TOT feature. However, in
the transmit mode, a single transmission
(uninterrupted depression of the PTT) 'times-out'
after a pre-programmed time, and the radio will
cease transmitting, even with the PTT switch
remaining pressed. An error tone is generated
until the PTT is released to alert the operator.

Lift the cover of the accessory connector (8)

on the top of the radio.

Firmly press the accessory plug(s) into the

accessory connector on the radio.

Fit the optional audio accessory clamp

(HLN8096).

Chargers
CHARGERS

WARNING

Insert the radio with a battery or a battery alone

into the charger. Charging times are as follows:

DO NOT charge battery if the temperature is

below 10C or above 40C as it will reduce
the lifetime of the battery.

DO NOT use the charger if it is wet or in any

way damaged. Follow the normal safety rules
for mains connected electrical equipment.

The batteries contain cadmium, a toxic metal;

dispose of old batteries in an appropriate
manner.
