Anatomy of Choroid and Retina Eyeball contains three layers: 1.

The outer coat is the fibrous layer which consist of the sclera and cornea. 2. The middle coat is the vascular layer which consist of the choroids , ciliary body, and iris. 3. the inner coat is the inner layer which consist of the retina that contains both optic and non-visual parts. Choroid The choroid is a dark reddish brown layer between the sclera and the retina. It is the largest part of the vascular layer of the eyeball. It lines most of the sclera. It is continuous anteriorly with the ciliary body. It attaches firmly to the pigment layer of the retina, but it can easily be stripped from the sclera Retina It is the inner layer of eyeball It consist of two functional part. The first part is the optic part of the retina which is sensitive to visual light rays and has two layers, a neural layer and pigment cell layer. The neural layer is light receptive while the pigment cell layer contain a single layer of cells that reinforces the light-absorbing property of the choroids in reducing the scattering of light in the eyeball The second part is the non-visual retina which is an anterior continuation of the pigment cell layer and a layer of supporting cells over the ciliary body which is the ciliary part of the retina and also the posterior surface of the iris which is iridial part of the retina. Histology of Choroid and Retina Choroid It is a highly vascularized coat It contains a loose connective tissue between its blood vessel. This connective tissue riches in fibroblast, macrophages, mast cells, plasma cells, collagen fibers, and elastic fibers It is black in color due to abundance of melanocyte in this layer. The inner layer of the choroid is called the choriocapillary layer is richer than the outer layer in small vessels It has an important function in nutrition of the retina and damage to this tissue causes serious damage to the retina Hyaline membrane known as Bruchs membrane separates the choriocapillary layer from the retina. It extends from the optic papilla to the ore serrata. The optic papilla is where the nerve enters the eyeball Bruchs membrane consists of five layers, The central layer
