UAB researchers pleased with Obesity risk scale

A five-stage scale used to determine obesity risk has been given the green light by UAB researchers. The Edmonton Obesity Staging System considers BMI, other illnesses and functional status of obese people to rank the consequences of excess weight. Researchers studied the data from U.S. National Health and Human Nutrition Examination surveys and found the EOSS to be accurate. "We found people in more severe stages of obesity are more likely to die earlier than those in less severe stages of obesity," says obesity expert David B. Allison, Ph.D.,, who says they weren't surprised by this outcome, but instead, gratified. Allison says the EOSS could be put in place to help predict death rates. "I think it's plausible that this system or something similar will be put into place to better determine who needs priority in receiving obesity treatment," Allison says. Copyright 2011 WBRC.
