INDIRECT QUESTIONS

Las preguntas se pueden clasificar tanto en Direct Questions como en Indirect Questions. Direct Questions, preguntas directas en castellano, forman por s solas una oracin y no forman parte de otra oracin mayor. Indirect Questions, preguntas indirectas, son aquellas que forman parte de otra oracin y se subordinan a ella. E.g.: Are you coming?

En ingls las preguntas indirectas conllevan una serie de cambios al no ser directamente preguntas: El orden de las palabras es igual que en afirmativo, por lo tanto no se produce la inversin de sujeto y el verbo: E.g.: What time is it?

Si en la pregunta directa existen auxiliares que se aadan exclusivamente para hacer preguntas (do does, did), desaparecen al pasar a ser una pregunta indirecta. El resto de auxiliares que tambin se usan en afirmativo se siguen utilizando (will, would, etc): E.g.: What time does the film start? Do you know what time the film starts? E.g.: How much will it cost? Do you have any idea how much it will cost? El signo de la interrogacin desaparece a no ser que la pregunta indirecta forme parte de otra pregunta: E.g.: What do you mean? Please explain me what you mean (frase afirmativa) E.g.: Where can I find John? Do you know where I can find John? (frase interrogativa) Si la pregunta es del tipo Yes / No Question hay que aadir If o Whether. Yes / No Question son las preguntas que no comienzan por una Question Word (what, where, why, when, etc). If o Whether equivalen al si de castellano: E.g.: Did anybody see you? Do you know if / whether anybody saw you? (Sabes si alguien te vi?)
