Objectives: 1. Identify the ways of controlling / preventing harmful effects of human activities to the environment. Value: Caring for the Environment

Subject Matter: A. Topic: Preserving/ Conserving the Balance of Life in the Ecosystem B. Concepts: Our most fundamental role as human beings is to uphold our ecosystem. We must maintain the integrity, good function and sustainability of the earths ecosystem. Sustained ecological balance assures the survival of the future generations. C. Processes: Observing, Identifying, Communicating D. References: BEC Handbook in Science & Health 6, II.7, pp. 3, 13 Into the Future: Science & Health 6, pp. 105-108 Moving Ahead with Science 6, pp.117-119 Todays Science & Health 6, pp. 109-112 Exploring Science & Health 6, p. 125-129 E. Materials: Pictures, Charts, Cartolina Strips, Activity Sheets, Video clips, LCD projector.

Procedures: A. Preliminary Activities: 1. Health Inspection 2. Weather Report 3. Science Trivia 4. Review: Identify the strategy used to cope with the population growth in the picture.

B. Developmental Activities: 1. Motivation: Watching a video clip The Chain of Life What did you observe in the video? What did it tells us about the environment? Do you think the message of the video is relevant at present situation? Why?

2. Presentation: Present the lesson through another video clip and with the use of the Anticipation Guide Sheet. Ask: Do you think we can still have the same environment as of what being showed in the video? Can the future generation experience it? Before the lesson Agree Disagree Statements 1. Wise use of trees is related to the wise use of water and soil. (see the attached Handout No. 1 for other items) ` Each pupil is going to answer the anticipation guide sheet by putting a check mark in the appropriate column. They should be ready to discuss their answer to the class. 3. Lesson Proper: a. Pre-Activity: o Presentation of the activity and the materials. o Setting of standards (Cooperation, doing work quietly, no roaming around the classroom during the activity) o Clarifying procedures b. Activity Proper: o Each group will be given a picture that shows harmful activity of mankind and set of clue words inside an envelope. o Each group must be able to identify or enumerate ways of preventing / controlling harmful activity shown in the picture by using the clue words. o Each group will have to choose a reporter to present their work to the class. 4. Reporting/ Discussion: o The chosen reporter of the group will have to present their work. o Questions are asked by the teacher to help the presenters explain the thought of their work. - What is preservation / conservation? - Why is there a need to sustain the ecological balance? - How can you help prevent the further or control destruction of the environment? o The teacher will give additional strategies or ways in controlling / preventing harmful effects of human activities. 5. Generalization: What can people do to prevent the harmful effects of human activities to the environment? What are the common ways of preserving the balance of life in the ecosystem? What are the programs and projects of our government on environmental conservation? Use again the Anticipation Guide Sheet and give it back to the pupils for their after the lesson answers. 6. Application / Value infusion: Opinion Log o Ask the students to answer the opinion log honestly. (See the attached Handout No. 2 for the guide questions) o Ask one pupil to share his/her answer to the class. C. Evaluation: Direction: Match column A to column B.
